🔥 The car winds around the bend and suddenly you’re there – that perfect lookout spot with panoramic views of the valley below, the sun warming your face as you unpack your basket. But hold up, before you get too comfortable, let’s make sure you’ve got the right gear for a ripper picnic in the Blue Mountains!
🧺 The Perfect Picnic Basket Setup
First things first, you’re gonna want a proper basket. Not those flimsy plastic ones that fall apart when you look at ’em. Get yourself a decent insulated basket – it keeps your brekkie and drinks at the perfect temp. I’ve got this ripper one with straps that you can wear like a backpack, which is heaps good when you’re hiking to your secret spot. Don’t forget a good quality picnic blanket – waterproof on one side, soft on the other. Mine’s got these handy corner weights so it doesn’t fly away when the wind picks up, which happens more often than you’d think up in the mountains!
🍽️ Food & Drink Essentials
Now for the good stuff – the food! You’re gonna want some easy-to-eat, no-fuss options. Think sandwiches cut into triangles (classic for a reason), some good cheese and crackers, and maybe some pre-cut fruit that won’t turn into mush in your bag. Don’t forget a good quality thermos for hot drinks – there’s nothing better than a cuppa tea when it’s a bit chilly up at Wentworth Falls. And for the adults, a nice bottle of something bubbly always goes down a treat. Just make sure you pack some plastic bags for your rubbish – we want to keep our beautiful Blue Mountains pristine, yeah?
🎒 Comfort & Convenience Items
You might be there for a few hours, so comfort is key. A compact foldable chair or cushion will save your back when you’re sitting on rocks all arvo. Don’t forget some wet wipes and hand sanitiser – after handling food and touching everything, you’ll be glad you did. And sunscreen! Even on cloudy days, those UV rays can sneak up on you. I always pack a small first aid kit too – bandaids, antiseptic cream, maybe some painkillers. You never know when you might need ’em when you’re exploring all the tracks and lookouts.
📱 Tech & Safety Gear
Now I know what you’re thinking – ‘Why would I need tech on a picnic?’ But trust me, it’s a lifesaver. A portable power bank is essential for keeping your phone charged, especially if you’re using it for navigation or taking photos. And a good quality powerbank with solar charging is even better when you’re out and about all day. For safety, always let someone know where you’re going when you’re heading to the more remote spots. And a whistle – it’s small, weighs nothing, but could save your life if you get lost. Last year, some mates of mine got caught out when the weather turned nasty, and they were glad they had theirs.
🌤️ Weather-Ready Additions
The Blue Mountains weather can change quicker than you can say ‘Look at that view!’ So pack a compact, lightweight rain poncho – the kind that folds up to fit in your pocket. And even if it’s sunny when you leave, throw in a light jacket or jumper. Those mountain breezes can get chilly once the sun starts to go down. If you’re planning to stay after dark, a good headlamp is a must – hands-free lighting for packing up or finding your way back to the car. And don’t forget a hat and sunglasses – those UV rays are no joke when you’re up high with less atmosphere to block ’em.
