π₯ Morning mist clings to the sandstone cliffs as the first rays of sunlight pierce through the eucalyptus canopy, revealing a winding path that wasn’t there last month. The Blue Mountains have just unveiled their newest addition to the hiking trails Australia network, and it’s already shaping up to be one of the best day hikes in Australia for the 2026 season.
π’ What’s Happening
Alright folks, exciting news! NPWS has officially opened the new Wentworth Pass Extension in the Blue Mountains – a ripper 12km loop that connects Leura Forest to the cliff tops near Sublime Point. This adds a fresh option to the best hiking trails Australia has to offer, giving us locals and visitors another cracker trail to explore. It opened just last week (early March 2026) after months of track work, and I reckon it’s gonna be a game-changer for anyone chasing those epic valley views without the crowds of the Grand Canyon track.
β What Makes This Trail Special
Look, I’ve done heaps of hikes around here, and this one’s got something unique. You’re getting pristine rainforest sections, then bam – you pop out at these newly constructed lookouts with 270-degree views across the Jamison Valley. There’s also a dedicated wildlife viewing platform about 4km in where you’re almost guaranteed to spot lyrebirds and maybe even a glossy black cockatoo if you’re lucky. The track’s been built to a higher standard too – proper sandstone steps, decent drainage, and less erosion-prone than some of the older routes.
β οΈ What to Watch Out For
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a walk in the park. You’re looking at about 600m of elevation gain overall, and the section between Leura Forest and the cliff tops is pretty steep in parts. The new lookouts don’t have safety barriers yet (they’re coming in April apparently), so keep the kids and dogs well back from edges. Also, parking at the trailhead is limited to about 20 spots, so get there early or you’ll be walking an extra kilometre from the overflow area. And mate, don’t even think about it if there’s been heavy rain – parts of the lower track turn into a creek!
π Gear Recommendations for This Season
March in the Blueys means autumn’s kicking in – mornings are crisp (around 12Β°C) but you’ll be sweating by midday. I’d recommend layers you can strip off. Good hiking boots are a must – the new sandstone steps can be slippery when damp. Bring at least 2L of water, there’s only one water refill station at the Leura Forest picnic area. And don’t forget your camera – the golden hour light hitting those new lookouts is absolutely stunning. If you’re keen on wildlife, pack binoculars and aim for the early morning or late arvo when the animals are most active.
π‘ Tips & Warnings
β
Download the NPWS app for real-time track conditions – they’re updating it weekly during the first few months
β
Combine with brekkie in Leura village – the bakery opens at 7am and does a ripper spinach and feta roll
β οΈ No mobile reception in the valley sections – tell someone your plans before heading down
β Don’t attempt after heavy rain – track closures are common and the sandstone gets super slippery
π Stay safe out there, mates! Give this new track a go while it’s fresh and let me know what you reckon. Always pack out what you pack in, and respect this beautiful Country. π
