🔥 Ever wondered how to tackle those epic 4WD tracks through the Aussie bush but didn’t know where to start? Well, mate, I’ve been there too! Let me show you the ropes based on my countless adventures around Cairns.
🎒 What You’ll Need Before You Go
Before you even think about hitting the tracks, you’ll need some basic gear. First up, a decent 4WD – doesn’t need to be fancy, but should be reliable. I started with a second-hand Toyota Hilux that was a ripper! Then you’ll need recovery gear: snatch strap, traction boards, shovel, and a decent jack. Don’t forget communication – UHF radio is essential out where there’s no mobile reception. And always pack plenty of water (at least 10L per person per day), food, and a basic first aid kit. Sunnies, hat, and long sleeves are a must – that Aussie sun can be brutal!
1️⃣ Step 1: Get Familiar with Your Vehicle
First things first, get to know your 4WD inside out. Learn where everything is – the diff locks, the 4WD engagement lever, your jack points. Practice engaging 4WD in a safe area like a car park. Get used to the feeling of driving with the hubs locked and understand how your vehicle handles differently in 4WD mode. I spent a whole weekend just practicing in different conditions before heading out on proper tracks. This might sound boring, but trust me, when you’re stuck in the middle of nowhere, you’ll be glad you did!
2️⃣ Step 2: Start with Easy Tracks
Don’t be a hero and tackle the hard stuff straight up! Cairns has some brilliant beginner-friendly tracks that’ll let you build confidence. Head to the Barron Gorge Road or the Kuranda Range Road – both are reasonably well-maintained and offer stunning views. These tracks are perfect for learning how to read the terrain, understand your vehicle’s limits, and get used to driving on dirt. Last weekend I took a mate who’d never 4WDed before on these tracks, and by the end of the day, he was a natural! Remember, it’s not a race – take your time and enjoy the journey.
3️⃣ Step 3: Learn Basic Recovery Techniques
No matter how good you are, there’s a fair dinkum chance you’ll get stuck at some point. That’s part of the adventure! The key is knowing how to get yourself out without calling for help. Start with the basics: digging your wheels out, using traction boards, and proper winch technique if you’ve got one. Practice in a safe environment so you’re not fumbling around when you’re covered in mud. The golden rule is always travel with at least one other vehicle – there’s safety in numbers and a mate with a snatch strap is worth its weight in gold when you’re bogged!
4️⃣ Step 4: Plan Your Proper Adventure
Once you’re comfortable with the basics, it’s time to plan a proper multi-day trip. The Bloomfield Track from Cairns to Cooktown is a ripper adventure that’s achievable for beginners with some preparation. Plan your fuel stops – there are limited options out that way. Check track conditions before you go – things can change quickly in the wet season. Download offline maps and tell someone your itinerary. I always carry satellite communicator as backup – gives peace of mind when you’re heading off the beaten track. Remember, the best adventures are the ones where you’re prepared but still open to whatever the bush throws at you!
5️⃣ Step 5: Join a Club or Community
One of the best things I ever did was join a local 4WD club. These groups are full of experienced blokes and sheilas who are only too happy to share their knowledge. They often run training days, social trips, and have heaps of local knowledge about track conditions and hidden gems. The Cairns 4WD Club is a great place to start. Plus, there’s nothing better than swapping stories around the campfire after a day’s driving with people who get the 4WD bug just like you do!
