π₯ The sun dips low over the Hunter Valley, casting long shadows across the gravel track as we wipe the dust off our helmets and share a quiet moment of victory. Just got back from 10 days exploring Australia with the kids, tackling family-friendly gravel routes that left us breathless and buzzing!
ποΈ Day 1: Sydney to Hunter Valley – The Warm-Up
We kicked off by driving north from Sydney, aiming for the Hunter Valley. The first gravel stretch starts just outside Pokolbin. Itβs gentle, rolling hills perfect for getting the kidsβ legs used to the gear changes. We stopped at a local winery (I had a juice box, obviously!) and rode back through the vineyards. The kids loved spotting the kangaroos hopping between the rows! Itβs only about 40km, so itβs not too taxing for a first day.
ποΈ Day 2: Mudgeeβs Rock Country
Next stop, Mudgee. This is where the gravel gets a bit more interesting with some rocky sections. Iβve been riding here for years, and itβs a ripper for intermediate riders. We tackled the βRocky Pointβ loop β keep your eyes on the ground for loose stones! The kids did amazingly well. We ended the day with a BBQ at our accommodation, using local beef from the farm next door.
ποΈ Day 3: The Blue Mountains Descent
Heading west to the Blue Mountains. This isnβt just about scenery (though those gum trees are iconic); itβs about technical riding. The descent from Katoomba onto the gravel tracks towards Leura is thrilling but requires focus. I made sure the kids had their gloves on tight! We took it slow, enjoying the mist rolling over the valley. Itβs a bit cooler here, so layer up!
ποΈ Day 4: Central Coast Coastal Gravel
Back east to the Central Coast. This route hugs the coastline, offering ocean views every few kilometres. The gravel here is finer, which means better traction for the little ones. We did a loop around Avoca Beach to Tuggerah Lake. Itβs flat, so itβs great for practising cornering without the stress of steep climbs. We packed a brekkie hamper and stopped at a lookout for pancakes!
ποΈ Day 5: Shoalhaven River Trail
South towards the Shoalhaven. This is a long, straight gravel track along the river. Itβs perfect for letting the kids build stamina. We rode about 60km, stopping at a few picnic spots. The river provides natural cooling breaks. Iβd recommend bringing extra water here β the sun can be deceptive under the tree canopy!
ποΈ Day 6: Jervis Bay Beach Breezes
We finished the riding section by heading down to Jervis Bay. The gravel tracks here are short but scenic, leading right to the white sand beaches of Hyams Beach. The kids spent the afternoon swimming (after the riding, of course!). Itβs a perfect balance β hard miles followed by reward. We stayed in a caravan park with great facilities.
π° Total Trip Cost & Gear Checklist
For 10 days, we spent around $2,500 AUD on accommodation and food. Entry to most trails is free! For gear: helmets, gloves, hydration packs, and a basic repair kit are non-negotiable. Donβt forget sunnies for the glare off the water!
π‘ Pro Tips for Family Gravel Riding
Start with shorter rides. Always check weather forecasts β gravel can be slippery when wet. Bring treats to keep morale high! And most importantly, let the kids pick the route sometimes β it gives them ownership of the adventure.
