What if I told you there’s more to Yarra Valley than just wine? My top 10 adventures for 2026 – ranked!

🔥 Ever wondered what it’s like to soar over vineyards in a hot air balloon or find secret waterfalls just an hour from Melbourne? I’ve spent the last 5 years exploring every nook and cranny of this region, and I reckon it’s the ultimate playground for anyone who loves the outdoors. Here are my top 10 adventures in Yarra Valley for 2026, mate!

1️⃣ Hot Air Balloon Flight

📍 Yarra Valley | ⏱️ 3-4 hours (inc flight)

Honestly, this is the absolute ripper of the lot. Floating over the misty vineyards at sunrise is something else entirely. I did this last winter and the silence is just magic. You get a champagne breakfast after landing too, which sets you up nicely for the day.

2️⃣ Warburton Rail Trail

📍 Warburton to Lilydale | ⏱️ Full day (40km one way)

Perfect for a pedal or a walk! This old railway line is now a sweet path winding through the bush and along the Yarra River. It’s mostly flat, so it’s heaps good for beginners. I usually just do a section from Warburton to the Redwood Forest because those trees are massive.

3️⃣ Mountain Biking at Yarra Ranges NP

📍 The Oaks, Launching Place | ⏱️ 2-3 hours

If you’ve got a bike and a bit of skill, The Oaks is an absolute must. It’s fast, flowy single-track with heaps of berms and jumps. Had a stack there last year but still reckon it’s the best ride in the region. Wear your pads though, mate!

4️⃣ Redwood Forest Walk

📍 Cement Creek, Warburton | ⏱️ 45 mins

This is a hidden gem the locals try to keep secret. It’s a stand of massive Californian Redwoods planted in the 1930s. Walking among them feels like you’re in a movie set. It’s super peaceful and great for a picnic brekkie.

5️⃣ Badger Weir Park

📍 Healesville | ⏱️ 1-2 hours

Cracking spot for a swim in summer or just a chill wander. The walk around the weir is easy and the water is crystal clear (and freezing!). Keep your eyes peeled for lyrebirds and wallabies. It’s my go-to when I want to escape the crowds.

6️⃣ Donna Buang Lookout & Tower

📍 Mount Dandenong Tourist Rd | ⏱️ 1 hour

Drive or hike up here for views that go on forever. The observation tower gives you a 360-degree look across the Yarra Valley and out to the city. On a clear day, you can see the Port Phillip Bay heads. Ripper spot for sunset.

7️⃣ Yarra River Kayaking

📍 Warrandyte to Wonga Park | ⏱️ 3-4 hours

Hire a kayak and paddle down the river. It’s a gentle current most of the way, so it’s relaxing rather than terrifying. Saw a massive platypus last time I went! Make sure you slap on the sunscreen because there’s zero shade on the water.

8️⃣ 1000 Steps Kokoda Track

📍 Ferntree Gully | ⏱️ 1-2 hours

Yeah, it’s tough, but it’s a classic for a reason. It gets packed on weekends, so go early in the arvo during the week if you can. Your legs will be burning, but the view at the top makes it worth it. Total respect for the Kokoda memorial.

9️⃣ Hedley Gorge Rainforest Walk

📍 Marysville | ⏱️ 1.5 hours

If you love rainforests, this is the spot. It’s lush, green, and smells amazing after rain. It’s a bit of a drive but super quiet compared to the Dandenongs. Great for some solo bush time.

🔟 Maroondah Reservoir Park

📍 Healesville | ⏱️ 1 hour

A lovely spot for a laid-back arvo stroll. The dam wall walk is short but sweet, and there are heaps of picnic tables right by the water. Plenty of rosellas around too if you’re into bird watching.

🏅 Honorable Mentions

If you’ve got extra time, check out the Healesville Sanctuary for native wildlife or the Silvan Reservoir for a chill picnic. Both are heaps good!

📋 Practical Info
