Want to Learn Kayaking in Australia? Here’s Exactly How I Did It!

🔥 Ever wondered what it’s like to glide across crystal-clear Australian waters while spotting dolphins and kookaburras? Let me show you how I went from total beginner to confident kayaker in just one season!

🎒 What You’ll Need

Before you hit the water, you’ll need some basic gear. Don’t worry, you don’t need to break the bank starting out!

✅ Kayak – Can start with a sit-on-top, heaps easier for beginners

✅ Paddle – Make sure it’s the right length for your height

✅ PFD (Personal Flotation Device) – Non-negotiable, mate!

✅ Sun protection – Hat, sunscreen, and sunnies are a must

✅ Water shoes or old sneakers – Protect your feet from sharp rocks

✅ Dry bag – Keep your phone and gear dry

✅ Water bottle and snacks – Paddling works up an appetite!

You can hire most of this stuff for your first few goes, which is bloody ripper when you’re just testing the waters.

1️⃣ Find the Right Spot

Perth’s got some unreal spots for kayaking, especially if you’re just starting out. My top recommendations:

📍Matilda Bay – Super calm waters, great views of the city

📍Hillarys Boat Harbour – Protected area with heaps of marine life

📍Swan River – Easy paddle with lots of spots to stop for a brekkie

Start with calm, sheltered waters rather than open ocean. You’ll build confidence faster when you’re not fighting waves! Last weekend I took my mate’s kids out to Matilda Bay and they were paddling like pros in no time.

2️⃣ Basic Strokes Technique

Getting your paddling technique right makes all the difference:

👉 Forward stroke – Dip the blade fully in the water near your feet, pull back alongside the boat, then lift out

👉 Reverse stroke – Same motion but pushing away from you

👉 Sweep stroke – Long, wide arc to turn the boat

👉 Draw stroke – Pull the boat sideways toward the paddle

Practice these on dry land first if you can! The key is keeping your core engaged rather than just using your arms. I still get a giggle watching people paddle with just their arms – looks like they’re trying to swim through air!

3️⃣ Getting In & Out Safely

This sounds basic but it’s where most beginners stuff up:

✅ Enter shallow water first – No deeper than your knees

✅ Place your paddle across the cockpit behind you

✅ Hold the boat’s sides with both hands

✸ Lower yourself into the seat sideways

✸ Swing your legs in one at a time

Getting out is basically the reverse. Always approach shore slowly and be prepared for waves. I learned this the hard way when a sneaky little wave dumped me in the drink fully clothed – not my best arvo!

4️⃣ Safety & Etiquette

Kayaking’s generally safe but you still need to be smart:

✅ Always wear your PFD – No exceptions, mate!

✅ Check weather before you go – Perth’s weather can change quick

✅ Tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back

✅ Keep an eye on tides and currents – Swan River can get sneaky

✅ Give other boats and swimmers plenty of space

✅ Take your rubbish with you – Leave no trace!

I always carry a waterproof whistle and my phone in a dry bag. Better safe than sorry, especially when you’re paddling alone like I sometimes do on early morning sessions.

5️⃣ Progressing Your Skills

Once you’ve got the basics down, you can start having real fun:

🚣‍♀️ Try different water types – Rivers, bays, estuaries

🐟 Go wildlife spotting – Dolphins, seals, and heaps of birdlife

🌅 Sunrise or sunset paddles – Absolute magic, trust me

📸 Practice photography from your kayak – Challenging but rewarding

👥 Join a local club – Meet other paddlers and learn more

Last season I joined the Perth Paddlers group and learned so much. We even did a moonlit paddle on the Swan River – was bloody unreal seeing the city lights from the water!
