🔥 The boat cuts through the turquoise water and suddenly you’re surrounded by the most vibrant coral you’ve ever seen – this is what our family Great Barrier Reef adventure looked like from day one to day five!
🗓️ Day 1: Arrival and Cairns Exploration
Touch down in Cairns and get straight into holiday mode! We grabbed our rental car (super easy from the airport) and headed straight to our accommodation – we stayed at the Cairns Coconut Holiday Resort which was heaps good for families with pools and activities. After checking in, we headed down to the Esplanade for a casual brekkie at Rusty’s Market – fresh tropical fruits and smoothies to kick things off. The arvo was all about exploring the Cairns Wildlife Dome – got to cuddle a koala (which was a massive highlight for the kids) and learn about Aussie wildlife. Make sure you book your reef tours for the next few days while you’re there – they fill up quick!
🗓️ Day 2: Outer Reef Adventure – Quicksilver
Up at 6am for our big day out! We boarded the Quicksilver vessel for a full-day outer reef tour. Bloody brilliant choice – the crew were legends and the boat was massive with so much room. We did two snorkel tours in different sections of the reef – saw Nemo heaps of times, turtles, and even a reef shark! The kids did the semi-submersible tour when they got tired of snorkelling. Lunch was a massive buffet with heaps of options. We also did the introductory dive which was a ripper experience – totally worth it even if you’re not certified! Got some epic underwater photos with the GoPro. Be sure to pack reef-safe sunscreen – they don’t let you use regular stuff.
🗓️ Day 3: Fitzroy Island Exploration
A more relaxed day today with a ferry to Fitzroy Island. The 45-minute ride was beautiful with views of the coastline. Once there, we did the Nudey Beach walk – an easy 20-minute trail that drops you at one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen! The water was crystal clear and perfect for the kids. We packed our lunch (there are bbq facilities) and spent the arvo snorkelling right off the beach – saw so many tropical fish! We also did the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre which was educational and heartwarming. The ferry back at sunset was the perfect end to a beautiful day.
🗓️ Day 4: Daintree Rainforest & Cape Tribulation
Today we headed north to the Daintree! Picked up a guide for the day which made it so much easier – he knew all the best spots and gave us heaps of info. Started with a river cruise spotting crocs (saw a big fella sunning himself!), then did a guided walk through the rainforest learning about medicinal plants and Aboriginal culture. Had lunch at the Daintree Tea House – the lemon myrtle cheesecake is a must-try! Then crossed the Daintree River to Cape Tribulation – standing where the rainforest meets the reef is something you can’t really describe. Finished the day with a swim at Emmagen Creek (fresh water, not salt!) and watched the sunset over the ocean. Epic day!
🗓️ Day 5: Local Markets and Departure
Our last day started early at the Rusty’s Markets – picked up some amazing local coffee and tried the famous mango smoothies. Did a bit of souvenir shopping for the family (the Aboriginal art was incredible). We had one last swim at the pool before heading to the airport. Before our flight, we did the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway which gave us stunning views of the rainforest from above – the perfect way to see the region one last time. The kids were shattered but already talking about when we can come back!
