Best 15 Surf Spots Near Brisbane | My Top Picks for 2026 – Ranked! 🏄

🔥 Did you know the Gold Coast pumps out over 300 days of surfable waves every single year? It’s absolutely bloody unreal! I’ve spent the last 5 years chasing swells from the Sunshine Coast down to the Snapper Rocks, and I reckon it’s time I shared my absolute favourite spots near Brisbane. My top 15 picks for surf spots near Brisbane – ranked!

1️⃣ Snapper Rocks

📍 Coolangatta | ⏱️ All day

This is the holy grail, mate. Known as the ‘Superbank’, it offers one of the longest waves in the world—sometimes connecting all the way to Kirra! It can get busy with pros, but watching them tear it up is a show in itself. Best on a low tide with a solid SSE swell.

2️⃣ Kirra Point

📍 Coolangatta | ⏱️ Early morning

My personal favourite. When the sand banks are right, Kirra produces these perfect, barrels that just go forever. It’s a bit faster than Snapper and seriously high performance. Grab a coffee across the road and watch the sunrise before paddling out.

3️⃣ Burleigh Heads

📍 Burleigh Heads | ⏱️ All day

Iconic. The rocky point creates a beautiful A-frame peak that peels perfectly towards the beach. Great for intermediate surfers looking to level up. Plus, the vibe in the park afterwards is heaps good with plenty of BBQs to fire up.

4️⃣ Cylinders (Noosa)

📍 Noosa National Park | ⏱️ Morning only

A bit of a drive north, but worth it. A longboarder’s dream located right in the national park. The wave is slow, crumbling, and absolutely beautiful. Just be prepared to share it with plenty of others and maybe a few dolphins!

5️⃣ Durannah Beach (The Spit)

📍 The Spit, Gold Coast | ⏱️ Late arvo

Locally known as ‘Duranbah’, this spot is super consistent. It handles almost any swell direction and size, making it a go-to when other beaches are flat. Can get a bit chunky when it’s big, so watch out for the sweep!

6️⃣ Currumbin Alley

📍 Currumbin | ⏱️ High tide

Protected by the headland, ‘The Alley’ is perfect when the wind is blowing from the South. It’s a long, gentle wave that’s awesome for longboarding or beginners finding their feet. The rock pools on the other side of the creek are a ripper bonus too.

7️⃣ Straddie (Main Beach)

📍 North Stradbroke Island | ⏱️ All day

You gotta catch the barge over, but Main Beach on Straddie offers miles of sandy bottom beach breaks. It’s rarely crowded, and you can often find a peak all to yourself. Ideal for a weekend camping trip.

8️⃣ Miami Beach

📍 Miami | ⏱️ Mid-tide

Great for intermediates. The waves here are fun and manageable, usually a bit softer than the heavy point breaks. Good parking and easy access make it a low-stress surf when you just wanna get wet without the drama.

9️⃣ Greenmount Beach

📍 Coolangatta | ⏱️ Low to mid

Situated right next to Snapper, Greenmount catches the same swell but is usually a bit smaller and friendlier. Excellent shelter from northerly winds. A top spot if Snapper is maxing out or looking too crowded for ya.

🔟 Tallebudgera Creek

📍 Tallebudgera | ⏱️ Incoming tide

Not exactly ocean surfing, but the wave that forms near the bridge on a big incoming tide is legendary. Perfect for learning or riding a mal. Super safe water with no sharks, usually just heaps of kids and stand-up paddle boarders.

✨ Nobby Beach

📍 Nobby Beach | ⏱️ All day

A consistent beach break that works well in northerly winds. The vibe here is youthful and energetic—plenty of cafes nearby for a post-surf brekkie. Watch out for the rip near the rocks though, it can be strong!

✨ Alexandra Headland

📍 Alex Beach, Sunshine Coast | ⏱️ Morning

Bit of a haul north but ‘Alex’ offers a fun right-hand point break. It’s exposed to the swell so it picks up plenty of size. Great atmosphere with a surf club right on the beach for a cold one after.

✨ Maroochydore

📍 Maroochydore | ⏱️ Low tide

Solid beach breaks here that can handle decent size. The river mouth offers some protection from southerly winds. A reliable spot when you’re on the Sunshine Coast and looking for a wave without the crowds of Noosa.

✨ Palm Beach

📍 Palm Beach | ⏱️ All day

A super family-friendly spot with plenty of waves to go around. The southern end usually offers better protection from the wind. Good amenities nearby and the water quality is usually pristine.

✨ Kurrawa Beach

📍 Broadbeach | ⏱️ All day

Central and easy to get to. Kurrawa is a patrolled beach that often has manageable waves for beginners and longboarders. Not as heavy as the points further south, making it a safe bet for a casual splash.

🏆 The Honorable Mentions

Keep an eye on ‘Caves Beach’ at Currumbin when the swell is huge—it’s for the pros only! And if you’re desperate for a wave in Brisbane, the ‘Wynnum Manly’ foreshore can sometimes offer a tiny knee-high ripple when the conditions are perfect, but don’t get your hopes up too high!

📋 Practical Info

📍 Gold Coast Hwy, Coolangatta QLD 4225 (Hub region for top spots)
🚗 From Brisbane CBD, drive approx 1 hour south via the M1 Pacific Motorway. Train services to Varsity Lakes or Robina also available (1hr 20m) + bus to beach.
💰 Free! All beaches are public access. Parking might cost $2-$4/hr in some spots.
🕐 Best early morning (dawn) or late afternoon (dusk) for offshore winds. Lifeguards usually on patrol 7am-5pm.
⏱️ Spend 2-4 hours per spot or make a day trip hitting 2-3 beaches.

💡 Tips & Warnings

✅ Check the surf report on sites like Coastalwatch or Magic Seaweed before you leave. Swell size and direction change everything!
✅ Respect the locals at Snapper and Kirra. If you’re a beginner, maybe sit on the inside or try Tallebudgera instead.
⚠️ The Gold Coast has strong rips, especially around the rock groynes. If caught, stay calm, float, and signal for help—don’t swim against it.
❌ Don’t leave valuables in your car at beach carparks. Thieves target surf spots, so take your keys with you in a waterproof pouch.
