π₯ With an average of 300 sunny days annually and water temps that rarely drop below 21Β°C, itβs honestly the perfect playground for surfers! Iβve spent heaps of time exploring the breaks from the Snapper to the Sunny Coast, and Iβm stoked to share my absolute favourites with you.
1οΈβ£ Snapper Rocks
π Coolangatta | β±οΈ 1hr drive from Brisbane
This is the holy grail, mate. Known as the ‘Superbank’, it offers one of the longest rides in the world. It can get crowded, but watching the pros carve it up is worth it alone. Best on a low tide with a solid SE swell.
2οΈβ£ Burleigh Heads
π Burleigh Heads | β±οΈ 1hr drive
If you want a classic point break with a bit of muscle, this is it. The wave here is powerful and beautiful. I love grabbing a coffee from the local cafes and watching the sunrise surfers before paddling out myself. Itβs absolute magic!
3οΈβ£ Noosa Heads
π Noosa | β±οΈ 1.5hr drive
A bit further north but totally worth the trek. The points here are long and gentle, perfect for intermediate surfers looking to improve their carving. Plus, the vibe in the water is super chill compared to the Gold Coast beats.
4οΈβ£ Currumbin Alley
π Currumbin | β±οΈ 1hr drive
This spot is a favourite for longboarders and mal riders. The ‘Alley’ offers a nice, mellow wave that peels perfectly along the rock wall. Itβs protected from the northerly winds, making it a go-to when it’s blowing elsewhere.
5οΈβ£ Stradbroke Island (Point Lookout)
π North Stradbroke Island | β±οΈ 2hrs (including ferry)
Youβll need to catch the barge across, but the beaches here are pristine. Cylinder Beach is great for beginners, while Main Beach offers punchier beach breaks. It feels like a proper adventure getting over there.
6οΈβ£ Kirra
π Coolangatta | β±οΈ 1hr drive
When the sand banks are right, Kirra is simply world-class. Itβs a fast, hollow wave that can get pretty intense. Iβd recommend leaving this one to the experienced crew unless youβre confident in your ability to take a beating!
7οΈβ£ Miami
π Miami | β±οΈ 55min drive
A ripper little beach break that picks up plenty of swell. Itβs a bit more spread out than Snapper or Kirra, so you can usually find your own little peak here. Great for a morning or arvo session when you don’t want the crowd.
8οΈβ£ Caloundra (Kings Beach)
π Caloundra | β±οΈ 1hr 15min drive
Kings Beach is a top pick if youβve got the kids with you. The surf is usually gentle and thereβs a saltwater pool for when you need a break. Itβs a very family-friendly spot with a relaxed atmosphere.
9οΈβ£ Durbanbah
π Tweed Heads | β±οΈ 1hr drive
Hidden behind the airport, this spot is a bit of a secret weapon. It offers a fun wedge that can get heavy on the right day. The view of the planes taking off while you surf is pretty unique too!
π Maroubra Beach (Alexandra Headland)
π Alexandra Headland | β±οΈ 1hr 30min drive
Locals call it ‘Alex’. Itβs a consistent beach break that handles a decent bit of size. There are usually plenty of peaks to choose from, making it a reliable option when other spots are closing out.
β¨ Mermaid Beach
π Mermaid Beach | β±οΈ 55min drive
If you want to avoid the tourist chaos of Surfers Paradise, Mermaid is the spot. Itβs got solid beach breaks and is popular with the locals. It can get a bit choppy in the wind, so check the conditions first.
β¨ Bribie Island (Woorim)
π Bribie Island | β±οΈ 1hr drive
Woorim faces the open ocean, so it gets plenty of swell. Itβs a bit of a drive through the back roads, but youβre rewarded with uncrowded waves and a laid-back country vibe. Good for a day trip.
β¨ Surfers Paradise
π Surfers Paradise | β±οΈ 50min drive
Yeah, itβs tourist central, but you canβt ignore it. The beach breaks here are fun and accessible. Itβs perfect for a quick splash after work or if you want to be close to the action for a feed afterwards.
β¨ Coolum
π Coolum Beach | β±οΈ 1hr 45min drive
A lovely spot on the Sunshine Coast. The beach offers consistent waves and the town is super cute. Great for a weekend getaway when you want to escape the city grind for a couple of days.
β¨ Nobby Beach
π Nobby Beach | β±οΈ 55min drive
Another Gold Coast staple. Itβs a fun beach break that works well on mid to high tide. Plus, the food scene around here is heaps good, so you can refuel with a cracking burger after your surf.
π Honorable Mentions
Keep an eye on **Coolangatta Beach** for learner waves and **Tallebudgera Creek** for a super calm session when the ocean is messy. Both are top spots in their own right!
