π₯ The salty breeze off the harbour hits your face as the sun finally starts to hang around a bit longer, mate. It’s that feeling of pure freedom knowing the warmer months are here to stay!
π What’s Changing
The NSW National Parks service has dropped the new ‘Summer 2026’ guidelines as of this week. The biggest shift is the updated booking system for campgrounds around the Blue Mountains and Royal National Park. No more waking up at midnight to snag a spotβthey’ve introduced a staggered release lottery for the most popular sites. Plus, there are new ‘Leave No Trace’ stricter fines in place if you’re caught leaving rubbish behind.
π When It Takes Effect
These new rules officially kicked off yesterday, January 29th, 2026, just in time for the long weekend. The new booking lottery is already live for dates starting from February 14th onwards. If you’ve got a trip planned for early February, you’re still under the old system, but anything after that needs the new registration.
π€ How It Affects You
Basically, if you’re planning a camping trip or a big day out in the major parks, you need to plan further ahead. The lottery system means you can’t be spontaneous with those top-tier spots. On the upside, it stops the bots from snatching everything up in seconds! It also means the parks might be a bit less chaotic since visitor numbers are being capped more strictly at popular lookouts like Wattamolla.
β What You Need to Do
First things first, create or update your profile on the NSW National Parks website to opt into the lottery alerts. Double-check your camping gear weightβthere are new limits on how much gear you can bring into designated wilderness zones to protect the tracks. Lastly, download the updated ‘Emergency Plus’ app; they’ve updated the pinned coordinates for rescue points in the Ku-ring-gai Chase area.
π‘ Tips & Warnings
β
Register for the lottery alerts ASAP if you want a spot in February or March.
β
Pack out all your rubbish, the new fines are absolutely hefty.
β Don’t rely on finding a walk-in spot at the popular campgrounds on a Friday arvo.
β οΈ Total fire bans are still in effect across many coastal parks until April.
