Heads up – new Margaret River cycling rules coming into effect! 🚴

🔥 Standing at the edge of the stunning Wilyabrup sea cliffs, the Indian Ocean crashes against the granite below while the morning sun lights up the karri forest in the distance—it’s the perfect backdrop for a ride, but you need to know the new playbook before you hit the tracks this year!

🔄 What’s Changing

Big news, mate! Starting this season, the Margaret River mountain biking trails are getting a serious update to management rules. The key change is the introduction of designated directional flow trails on weekdays to reduce collision risks during high-traffic periods. Plus, there’s a new booking system required for large groups (10+ riders) on the popular Wadandi Track section near Cowaramup. It’s all about keeping the flow smooth and safe for everyone!

📅 When It Takes Effect

These new rules officially kick off on **February 1, 2026**. Rangers will be doing a soft launch with warnings for the first two weeks, but after that, fines can apply for breaches—especially for going the wrong way on those new one-way trails. If you’re planning a trip for the upcoming autumn school holidays (April 2026), you’ll definitely want to be across these changes.

👤 How It Affects You

If you’re a solo rider or just with a couple of mates, the main thing is watching out for new signage at trailheads. No more winging it—you gotta check the map app or physical boards at the start. For families or social groups, you’ll need to register your ride online if you’ve got more than 10 people. It’s free, but you gotta do it at least 24 hours before you roll out.

✅ What You Need to Do

Before you pack the ute, download the updated ‘Margaret River Trails’ app for 2026—it’s got real-time trail status and directions. Make sure you check if your favourite loop is now one-way. And if you’re leading a big crew, get that registration sorted online ASAP. Don’t be that person holding everyone up at the trailhead because you didn’t check the new rules!

💡 Tips & Warnings

✅ Check the Trail Status on the app before driving out—some tracks close after rain for soil preservation.
✅ Pack a spare tube and plenty of water; some sections are remote and the marri trees love tyres!
⚠️ Watch out for kangaroos and emus on the tracks, especially early morning and late arvo.
❌ Don’t ignore the directional signs—rangers are strict about the new flow rules from Feb 1.
