Did you know the Great Barrier Reef covers over 344,000 square kilometres? Here are my favourite kayaking spots in Tropical North Queensland!

🔥 Did you know the Great Barrier Reef covers over 344,000 square kilometres? That’s a bloody massive playground to explore, and honestly, there’s no better way to see it than from a kayak! I’ve spent heaps of time paddling these turquoise waters, and let me tell you, gliding over coral reefs with turtles popping up beside you is an experience you won’t forget in a hurry. Here are my favourite kayaking spots in Tropical North Queensland!

📍 Fitzroy Island – The Turtle Highway

This spot is an absolute ripper, especially if it’s your first time! You can rent kayaks right off the beach at Welcome Bay. I paddled out to Little Fitzroy Island last arvo and the water was crystal clear. It’s super sheltered, so even if you’re a bit wobbly, you’ll be sweet. Plus, you’re pretty much guaranteed to see green sea turtles – I counted three on my last trip!

📍 Mission Beach – Dunk Island Views

Fancy a bit of a challenge? Mission Beach offers stunning views out towards Dunk Island. The launch at Clump Point is easy to find, and paddling across the channel is a proper adventure. If the weather’s playing nice, you can land on the island beach for a break. Just keep an eye on the wind, it can pick up in the afternoon!

📍 Hinchinbrook Island – Wilderness Paddling

For those who want to feel like they’re truly in the wild, Hinchinbrook is the go-to. We’re talking mangrove creeks and secluded beaches here. It’s a bit more remote, so you’ll want to be confident in your skills. The channel between the island and the mainland is magic, but you gotta respect the tides. I reckon booking a guided tour here is the way to go for your first crack at it.

🎒 Pre-Trip Checklist

Don’t rock up empty-handed, mate! You’re gonna need reef-safe sunscreen (zinc or titanium dioxide are best), a wide-brim hat, and polarised sunnies so you can spot the fishies underwater. A rashie or long-sleeve swim shirt is a lifesaver against the Queensland sun. And definitely bring a dry bag for your phone and snacks—nothing worse than a soggy sandwich!

🌤️ Best Time to Go

You’ll want to aim for the dry season, so June to October is primo. The skies are blue, the water is flat, and the stingers aren’t out in full force. If you do head out in the warmer months (November to May), you absolutely must wear a stinger suit. Trust me, you don’t want an Irukandji jellyfish ruining your day!

💰 Keeping Costs Down

Kayaking doesn’t have to break the bank! Hiring a single kayak for a couple of hours usually sets you back about $40-$60. If you’re travelling with a mate, grab a double kayak to split the cost. Keep an eye out for package deals that include snorkel gear too. Some hostels in Cairns even offer discounts if you book through them, so ask around!

📊 Quick Spot Comparison

🏆 **Best for Beginners**: Fitzroy Island – calm waters and easy access.

🌊 **Best for Adventure**: Mission Beach – open water crossing to Dunk Island.

🏕️ **Best for Wilderness**: Hinchinbrook Island – raw nature and solitude.

💡 Tips & Warnings

✅ Apply reef-safe sunscreen before you get on the water – the sun is harsher than you think!
✅ Bring plenty of water. Paddling is thirsty work, especially in the tropics.
⚠️ Always check the weather forecast and marine conditions before heading out. Don’t paddle in rough seas or strong winds.
❌ Don’t stand on the coral or touch the marine life. Look but don’t touch!
