Spring is THE Time for Cycling in Australia!

🔥 The crisp morning air fills your lungs as you clip into your pedals, the smell of eucalyptus mingling with the fresh sea breeze as you roll along Hobart’s waterfront – this is what spring cycling in Tassie is all about, mate!

📅 Why Spring?

Spring (September to November) is absolutely ripper for cycling in Hobart! The weather’s warming up but it’s not stinking hot yet, the days are getting longer, and the scenery is absolutely bonza with spring blooms popping up everywhere. Last year I did the Derwent River ride in spring and it was heaps good – perfect temps and not too many bogans on the path like you get in summer!

🎯 Best Activities

Righto, let’s get into it! For first-timers, I’d start with the Hobart Waterfront Loop – it’s flat, scenic, and you can stop for a brekkie or coffee along the way. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, the Kangaroo Valley track is ripper but watch out for those steep bits! And if you’re really keen, the Mount Wellington descent is an absolute adrenaline rush – just make sure your brakes are good!

🎒 What to Pack

Don’t just rock up with your sunnies and think you’re ready to go! Here’s my checklist:

✅ Helmet – non-negotiable, mate

✅ Water bottle – you’ll get thirsty

✅ Snacks – a muesli bar or two works wonders

✅ Phone – for navigation and emergency calls

✅ Light jacket – spring weather can be unpredictable

✅ Sunscreen – even on cloudy days, those UV rays are no joke

✅ Basic repair kit – pump, puncture kit, multitool

🌤️ Weather Tips

Spring in Hobart can be a bit tricky – one minute it’s sunny as, next minute you’re getting pelted with rain. Best to check the forecast before you head out, and always dress in layers. Mornings can be bloody chilly, but by arvo it’s often warm enough for just a t-shirt. And don’t forget – it’s Tassie, so the weather can change quicker than you can say ‘pass me another VB!’

📍 Top Spots This Season

Hobart’s got some cracker spots for cycling:

📍 Waterfront Precinct (7000) – flat, scenic, great for beginners

📍 Derwent River Trail (7000) – mostly flat, follows the river

📍 Kangaroo Valley Track (7004) – bit more challenging but beautiful

📍 Mount Wellington (7000) – epic views but steep climb

Getting around’s easy – you can hire bikes from several spots in the city center, or if you’ve got your own, there’s plenty of options for getting to these spots. From Hobart CBD, most are within 30 minutes by car or bike.
