π₯ Dust kicks up behind your tyres as you crest the hill, and suddenly the whole Yarra Valley spreads out before you β rolling vineyards, misty ranges, and winding singletrack that disappears into the gum trees. This is the moment you realise why mountain bikers rave about this place. Everything you need to know about Yarra Valley mountain biking in one post!
π Yarra Valley MTB Overview
Right, so the Yarra Valley isn’t just about wine and cheese, mate! It’s actually become one of Victoria’s top mountain biking destinations, and for bloody good reason. Located about an hour east of Melbourne CBD, this region serves up everything from chill beginner trails to proper gnarly descents that’ll test your skills.
The main spots you’ll wanna know about are the Warburton Mountain Bike Trail (an absolute ripper network!), Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail for something flatter, and the trails around Kinglake if you’re keen on a bit more technical stuff. Whether you’re a complete newbie or you’ve been shredding for years, there’s something here for everyone!
π Getting There
G’day! So you’re keen to hit the trails? Here’s how to get your wheels to the valley:
π **By Car (Recommended):** From Melbourne CBD, jump on the Eastern Freeway/EastLink, then head out along the Maroondah Highway. You’re looking at about 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic and which trailhead you’re aiming for. Plenty of parking at most spots!
π **Public Transport:** You can catch a VLine train to Lilydale or Warburton station, but honestly? It’s a bit of a faff if you’re bringing your own bike. Doable, but I’d recommend driving if you can.
π **Shuttle Services:** Some local operators run shuttles from Melbourne, which is heaps convenient if you don’t wanna drive post-ride (especially if you’re hitting the wineries after!).
β Must-Do Trails
Alright, here’s where the magic happens! These are the trails I always recommend to mates:
π’ **Beginner Friendly:**
β’ Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail (38km one way) β Dead flat, scenic, perfect for building confidence
β’ Warrandyte State Park easy loops β Technical but forgiving
π‘ **Intermediate:**
β’ Warburton MTB Trail Network β Miles of flowing singletrack through beautiful bushland
β’ Kinglake National Park β A mix of everything with some ripping downhill sections
π΄ **Advanced:**
β’ You Yangs (bit further out) β Proper technical stuff with jumps and drops
β’ Warburton’s black diamond runs β Not for the faint-hearted!
My personal fave? The Warburton network. It’s just got such a good vibe and the trail maintenance is top-notch!
π What to Bring
Don’t rock up unprepared, mate! Here’s your essential kit:
β **The Basics:**
β’ A decent mountain bike (obviously!) β hire one if you don’t have your own
β’ Australian standards approved helmet β non-negotiable
β’ Gloves β your hands will thank you
β’ Sunnies for eye protection
β **Safety Gear:**
β’ Knee pads (highly recommend even for beginners)
β’ Basic first aid kit
β’ Plenty of water β at least 2L
β’ Snacks β trail mix, bananas, whatever fuels you
β **Tools & Spares:**
β’ Spare tube and pump
β’ Multi-tool
β’ Phone with offline maps downloaded
β οΈ **Weather-dependent:** In cooler months, pack a light rain jacket. In summer, slip-slop-slap like your life depends on it!
π½οΈ Where to Eat & Refuel
After smashing out some kays, you’re gonna be hungry! The Yarra Valley doesn’t muck around when it comes to food:
β **Pre-Ride Brekkie:**
β’ Little Kevin in Warburton β Cracking coffee and brekkie rolls
β’ Yarra Valley Farmers Market (if you’re there on a Sunday)
π½οΈ **Post-Ride Feed:**
β’ Healesville Hotel β Classic pub grub, cold beers, bike-friendly
β’ Four Pillars Gin (Healesville) β If you’re not driving, their tasting room is ace
β’ Any of the wineries with restaurants β Innocent Bystander, Balgownie Estate
π₯§ **On-Trail Snacks:** The Warburton General Store does great pies to shove in your pack!
π° Cost & Hours
Let’s talk dollars, mate:
**Trail Access:** Most trails are FREE! The national and state parks don’t charge entry fees for cyclists.
**Bike Hire:** $50-$100/day depending on quality
β’ Basic hardtail: Around $50-70
β’ Full suspension: $80-120
**Guided Tours:** $150-$250 including bike hire and guide
**Shuttle Services:** $30-50 if you want lifts to the top!
π **Best Hours:** Early morning is gold β cooler temps, fewer crowds, and that beautiful mist in the valleys. Aim to start by 8-9am in summer.
π **Best Season:** Spring (Sep-Nov) and Autumn (Mar-May) are absolutely perfect. Summer can be brutally hot, and winter gets muddy.
π‘ Insider Tips
Here’s the stuff I’ve learned from countless rides in the valley:
β’ Download the Trailforks app β it’s bloody essential for navigation
β’ Check the weather forecast religiously β conditions can change fast
β’ Start on easier trails than you think you need β Aussie trails can be sneaky technical
β’ Ride with a mate if possible, especially as a beginner
β’ The Warburton trails can get busy on weekends β weekday rides are heaps more chill
β’ If you’re hiring a bike, book ahead in peak season!
β’ Respect the wildlife β roos and wombats aren’t the best at sharing trails
β’ Leave no trace β pack out everything you pack in
