π₯ The boat cuts through crystal-clear water and suddenly there it is – a sleek new viewing platform rising from the reef itself. Big news: The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority just dropped something exciting! A brand new lookout has opened, and it’s gonna change how you experience this natural wonder.
π The Announcement
Bloody exciting times, mate! After months of construction and careful environmental planning, the new Reef Lookout officially opened to the public this month. It’s located at a previously hard-to-access section of the outer reef, giving visitors a completely fresh perspective on the world’s largest coral reef system. The structure was designed with minimal environmental impact – it’s fully modular and can be removed without leaving a trace!
β Key Features
Here’s what you’re getting with this ripper new addition:
π 40-metre elevated viewing platform with 360-degree views
π€Ώ Underwater observation deck (no getting wet required!)
πΈ Dedicated photography zones with the best lighting angles
π¦ Wildlife spotting scopes for turtles, rays, and maybe even reef sharks
βΏ Fully accessible design – wheelchairs and prams welcome
πΏ Solar-powered with zero emissions
The underwater deck is what’s got everyone talking – you can see the coral gardens without strapping on a tank!
π When & Where
The lookout is now OPEN and operating daily! It’s located approximately 70km offshore from Cairns, accessible through licensed reef tour operators. Bookings are essential as they’re limiting numbers to 200 visitors per day to protect the reef.
Several tour companies have already added it to their routes – I’d recommend checking with Reef Magic, Quicksilver, or Passions of Paradise for the latest availability. The platform operates from 8am to 4pm daily, weather permitting.
π° Pricing
Here’s the breakdown:
π€ Full-day tour including lookout access: $275-$350 per adult
π¨βπ©βπ§βπ¦ Family passes (2 adults, 2 kids): $780-$900
π€Ώ Add-on snorkel gear: $25
π₯ Morning tea & lunch usually included
The lookout access itself is covered in your tour price – no extra fees once you’re out there. Bloody good value when you think about the unique views you’re getting!
π‘ Tips & Warnings
β
Book at least 2-3 weeks ahead – spots are filling fast with this new attraction!
β
Bring polarised sunnies – cuts the glare and you’ll see more marine life from above
β οΈ Sea sickness tablets are your friend. Even on calm days, the outer reef can get choppy
β Don’t forget reef-safe sunscreen! Regular sunscreen damages coral – most boats sell it if you forget
