🔥 Did you know that over 85% of Sydney locals consider the Blue Mountains their weekend escape of choice? After exploring this region for over 5 years, I’ve put together this ripper ranking of the absolute must-dos near Sydney!
1️⃣ Blue Mountains Scenic World
This place is an absolute ripper mate! The Scenic Railway and Skyway give you insane views of the Jamison Valley. Last weekend I took my rellies there and even the oldies were impressed. The rainforest walk at the bottom is heaps good too.
📍 Scenic World, Katoomba NSW 2780
⏱️ Half day to full day
The views alone are worth the entry fee, but combo tickets give you the best value.
2️⃣ Jervis Bay Beach Bliss
If you wanna see water so clear you can spot fish from the shore, this is your spot. Hyams Beach has the whitest sand in the world, apparently! Perfect for a family arvo or just chilling with a mate. Pack the sunnies and your bathers!
📍 Hyams Beach, Jervis Bay NSW 2540
⏱️ Full day trip
About 2.5 hours south of Sydney – make a weekend of it if you can!
3️⃣ Royal National Park Coastal Walk
This walk is bloody brilliant! The Coast Track from Bundeena to Wattamolla offers epic coastal views with heaps of little beaches along the way. I did this last spring and saw whales breaching offshore. Pack a thermos and some snags for a proper Aussie barbie!
📍 Bundeena to Wattamolla, Royal National Park
⏱️ Full day hike (can be broken into sections)
Best from September to April when the weather’s kind.
4️⃣ Hunter Valley Wine Tasting
For the grown-ups in the crew, the Hunter Valley is top shelf. I’ve lost count of how many cellar doors I’ve visited, but Tyrrell’s and Brokenwood are my go-tos. The food scene here has gone off lately too – make sure you book ahead!

⏱️ Weekend getaway
About 2 hours north of Sydney – perfect for a weekend away.
5️⃣ Port Stephens Dolphin Watching
Seeing dolphins in their natural habitat is a proper buzz. I took my niece last school holidays and her face lit up when they started jumping alongside the boat. The best part? It’s not just for tourists – locals love it too!
📍 Nelson Bay, Port Stephens NSW 2318
⏱️ Half day tour
About 2.5 hours north of Sydney – combine with sandboarding at Stockton Beach!
6️⃣ Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park Aboriginal Sites
This place is full of history and proper Aussie bush. The Aboriginal rock art here is thousands of years old – it’s mind-blowing when you think about it. The West Head Lookout gives you views across Pittwater and Broken Bay too.
⟟ West Head Road, Akuna Bay NSW 2083
⏱️ Half day to full day
Only about 45 minutes from the city – perfect for a day trip when you don’t wanna go too far.
7️⃣ Byron Bay Lighthouse & Beaches
Yeah I know it’s a bit of a trek, but Byron Bay is worth the drive. The lighthouse walk gives you epic coastal views, and the beach is perfect for a swim. I always grab a coffee from The Farm while I’m there – proper good stuff!
⟟ Lighthouse Road, Byron Bay NSW 2481
⏱️ Weekend getaway
About 8 hours north of Sydney – make it a proper weekend away!
8️⃣ Nelson Falls Walk in Morton National Park
This hidden gem is one of my absolute favourite spots. The walk through rainforest to Nelson Falls is proper peaceful, and you’ll likely spot wallabies along the way. It’s not on the main tourist trail, which makes it even better!
📍 End-of-Nelson-Falls-Road, Bundanoon NSW 2578
⏱️ Half day walk
About 2 hours south of Sydney – combine with a visit to the nearby Southern Highlands.
9️⃣ Jenolan Caves Underground Adventure
These caves are bonkers! The underground rivers and massive chambers are something else. I did the Lucas Cave tour last year and still reckon about it. The best bit? It’s open year-round, rain or shine!
⟟ Jenolan Caves Road, Jenolan Caves NSW 2790
⏱️ Half day to full day
About 3 hours west of Sydney – combine with a Blue Mountains trip for a weekend away.
🔟 Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve
This spot in Coffs Harbour is bloody brilliant for whale watching during migration season. The walk around the island is easy enough for the whole family, and you’ll get epic views of the coastline. I always grab fish and chips from the nearby wharf after!
⟟ Muttonbird Island, Coffs Harbour NSW 2450
⏱️ Half day
About 5 hours north of Sydney – perfect stop on the way to or from Queensland.
✨ South Coast Beach Hopping
From Kiama to Merimbula, the South Coast has some of the best beaches in Australia. I love just driving up and down the coast, stopping at different beaches each arvo. The Pinnacles at Jervis Bay are a must-see too!
📍 South Coast NSW
⏱️ Weekend getaway
About 2-3 hours south of Sydney – perfect for a spontaneous weekend trip!
✨ Wollemi Wilderness Walk
This walk is for the proper adventurists! The Wollemi National Park is massive and relatively untouched. I did a 3-day hike here last year and felt like I had the whole place to myself. You might even spot the Wollemi Pine – one of the oldest trees on earth!
⟟ Newnes, Wollemi National Park NSW
⏱️ Multi-day adventure
About 2.5 hours north-west of Sydney – best for experienced hikers with proper gear.
