🤿 Over 30 species of reef fish await! Your Snorkeling 101 Guide 🦈

🔥 Did you know that the waters off Margaret River are home to over 30 distinct species of reef fish? I just got back from a week in Margaret River, and mate, that crystal-clear water is absolutely unreal for first-timers!

🎒 What You’ll Need (Prereqs)

Before you hit the water, you gotta sort your gear. Don’t stress about buying everything! Most tour operators in Margaret River provide masks, snorkels, and vests. But if you’re DIYing it, grab a well-fitting mask (no leaks!) and a snorkel with a purge valve. Wetsuits are non-negotiable here—the Southern Ocean is chill! A 3mm full-body suit will keep you comfy. Oh, and reef-safe sunscreen is a must to protect those beautiful coral ecosystems.

1️⃣ Gear Up & Get Fitted (Morning)

Start your day with a brekkie at one of those local cafes—grab some avocado smash and coffee. Then, head to your chosen spot (I recommend Prevel Park or the Geographe Bay area). If you’re with a tour, they’ll help you fit the mask. Pro tip: Spit in your mask before putting it on! It stops fogging better than any spray. Adjust the straps so they’re snug but not choking you.

2️⃣ Master the Float (Mid-Day)

Once you’re in the water, don’t thrash about! Keep your face down and let your legs float naturally. If you’re kicking too hard, you’ll sink. Use flutter kicks gently from the hips, not the knees. Breathe through your snorkel slowly and rhythmically. If water gets in, just blow sharply! It’s all about relaxation, not swimming a race.

3️⃣ Explore the Reef (Arvo)

This is where the magic happens! Look for colourful reef fish like anthias and wrasse. In Margaret River, you might even spot a white-spot eagle ray or a friendly sea turtle if you’re lucky! Keep your distance—don’t touch the coral, and don’t chase the wildlife. Take photos if you want, but respect their space. The underwater world here is stunning!

4️⃣ Post-Snorkel Recovery (Evening)

After a few hours in the water, you’ll be hungry! Head back to town for some fresh seafood—Margaret River is famous for its oysters and prawns. Wash it down with a local Chardonnay or Shiraz; they’ve got some of the best wines in Australia. It’s the perfect way to wind down after a morning exploring the depths.
