🔥 With over 200,000 visitors exploring Kakadu National Park each year, this ancient landscape offers experiences that’ll blow your mind! Here’s my top 10 activities – ranked!
1️⃣ Yellow Water Billabong Cruise
This is absolutely the crown jewel of Kakadu! Spot crocs, birds, and maybe even a buffalo while gliding through wetlands that’ve been around for millions of years. I’ve seen heaps of salties here, including a ripper 4-metre beast that gave everyone a proper scare! Best done at sunrise when the wildlife’s most active.
2️⃣ Ubirr Rock Art
Standing at Ubirr, you’re looking at art that’s been around for over 20,000 years! The Dreamtime stories painted on these rocks are some of the oldest continuous art traditions on the planet. The view from the top over the floodplains is absolutely bloody stunning, especially during the wet season.
3️⃣ Jim Jim Falls
After a bit of a bumpy 4WD adventure, you’ll find this massive waterfall cascading down red cliffs into a crystal-clear pool. Last weekend I was there and could actually swim at the base – something that doesn’t happen every year! The walk up the gorge is a bit of a mission but totally worth it.
4️⃣ Nourlangie Rock
Another cracking art site with some of the most accessible and impressive Aboriginal rock art in Australia. The Anbangbang Gallery has some seriously detailed paintings that tell ancient stories. The sunset from the main lookout is heaps good too – perfect for your Insta!
5️⃣ Maguk (Barramundi Gorge)
This hidden gem has become my favourite swimming spot in Kakadu! A crystal-clear pool at the base of a waterfall, surrounded by lush monsoon forest. You’ll need a bit of 4WD to get there but it’s way less crowded than Jim Jim. I reckon it’s heaps better for a dip!
6️⃣ Gunlom Waterfall
Natural infinity pool at the top with views for days! This spot got a bit more attention after being featured in that Crocodile Dundee movie, but it’s still pretty special. The top pool is perfect for a refreshing swim after the hike up. Bring your togs!
7️⃣ Mamukala Wetlands
Boardwalk heaven for bird lovers! During the wet season, this area transforms into a waterbird paradise with thousands of birds including brolgas and jabirus. I’ve counted over 40 different species in one arvo here – it’s proper birdwatching heaven!
8️⃣ Bowali Visitor Centre
Don’t skip this place! It’s got heaps of info about the park’s ecology, culture, and history. The cultural centre is run by Traditional Owners who share proper stories about country. Plus, the air-conditioning is a lifesaver on a hot day!
9️⃣ Kakadu Cultural Festival
If you time your visit right (usually around June/July), you can catch this ripper festival where you’ll see traditional dance, music, art, and taste bush tucker. Last year’s event had didgeridoo workshops that were absolutely brilliant!
🔟 Twin Falls
The accessible option for waterfall chasing! You can get to this beauty without needing serious 4WD skills. The walk through the monsoon forest is lovely, and the waterfall cascades into a lovely swimming spot when the water’s up. Perfect for families!
