Great Ocean Road Hiking Review | Standing at the Edge of the World!

🔥 Standing at the edge of the Twelve Apostles at sunset, with the Southern Ocean crashing against ancient limestone cliffs, you can’t help but feel like you’re on the edge of the world. I’ve spent the last year exploring every track along this iconic stretch of coastline, and I’m here to spill the beans on whether it’s worth the hype!

📦 First Impressions

Right off the bat, I gotta say the Great Ocean Road hikes are bloody ripper! The diversity is unreal – from easy coastal strolls to proper bush bashings. The Otway Rainforest section with those massive ferns and towering trees feels like stepping into Jurassic Park, while the coastal sections give you postcard-perfect views at every turn. I reckon even your non-outdoor-mate mates will be impressed with this one.

🏃 Real-World Testing

Tried these tracks in all conditions – from sunny arvos to proper miserable days. The Gibson Steps down to the beach are a must-do, but watch those tides, mate! My personal fave was the Marriners Lookout track – only 2km but the views of the Apostles from up there? Unreal. The Loch Ard Gorge loop is heaps good too, though it gets packed on weekends. Pro tip: start early to beat the crowds and get that golden hour light.

⚖️ Pros & Cons

✅ Pros: World-class scenery that actually delivers, heaps of options for all fitness levels, great mix of rainforest and coastal vibes, well-maintained tracks, heaps of wildlife spotting opportunities (saw a koala just chilling on a branch!)

❌ Cons: Can get absolutely packed during peak season, some tracks are quite exposed to weather, parking is a nightmare in popular spots, midges in the rainforest sections will drive you bonkers if you’re not prepared

💰 Value for Money

Here’s the thing – you don’t need to pay for any guided tours to experience the best bits. Most of the epic tracks are completely free! The only costs are petrol to get there (about 3 hours from Melbourne), parking fees at some spots ($5-10), and maybe a coffee and pie at one of the local cafes. For the sheer beauty and variety you get, it’s honestly one of the best outdoor value-for-money experiences in the country.

💡 Tips & Warnings

✅ Start your day early to secure parking and avoid the crowds – by 10am, popular spots are packed!
❌ Don’t rely on Google Maps for everything – some of the best tracks aren’t clearly marked on your phone
⚠️ ⚠️ Watch the tide times when doing Gibson Steps – you don’t want to get trapped by the rising Southern Ocean!
✅ Pack layers – weather can change from sunny to proper windy and chilly in minutes along the coast
