Here’s exactly what to buy for rock climbing in Western Victoria this autumn!

🔥 The crisp morning air hits your face as your chalk-dusted fingers find their first hold on the limestone cliffs of Arapiles, the scent of eucalyptus mixing with the promise of adventure in Western Victoria this autumn season!

📦 Climbing Shoes

A decent pair of climbing shoes is non-negotiable. I’ve been using the La Sportiva TC Pro for years – they’re perfect for the limestone around Arapiles and Mount Arapiles. The downturn gives you precision on tiny edges, and the rubber sticks like glue to our local rock. Around $200, but worth every penny!

📦 Chalk & Chalk Bag

Don’t underestimate the power of good chalk! Western Victoria’s autumn can be humid, so you’ll need magnesium carbonate with some drying additives. Get a chalk bag with a stiff mouth so it doesn’t collapse when you’re reaching for it. I grab mine from BCF for about $30 total.

📦 Harness

You’ll want a comfortable harness that won’t restrict movement when you’re tackling those multi-pitch routes. The Black Diamond Momentum is a ripper choice – adjustable for different layers, padding in all the right places, and won’t break the bank at around $80. I’ve had mine for three years and it’s still going strong!

📦 Helmet

Safety first, mate! A good climbing helmet can save your life if rocks come loose. The Petzl Sirocco is my go-to – super light, doesn’t interfere with your vision, and has great ventilation for those warmer autumn days. About $120 from Mountain Designs.

📦 Bouldering Pad

For all the bouldering spots around Grampians and Mount Arapiles, you’ll need a pad. The Moon Climbing Pad is heaps good – folds up nicely for transport, has multiple zones for different thicknesses, and the outer material is tough as nails. Around $180 but worth it for the protection.

📦 Quickdraws

You’ll need at least 8-10 quickdraws for sport climbing. The DMM Phantom is my top pick – super lightweight, the gate action is buttery smooth, and the wire gate won’t freeze up in those chilly autumn mornings. Expect to pay around $25 each at Outdoors Australia.

📦 Rope

A 60m dynamic rope is perfect for most climbs in Western Victoria. The Sterling 9.8mm is a ripper – durable, handles well, and works beautifully with belay devices. Around $150 from Gear Up. Just make sure to check it regularly for any wear and tear!

📦 Belay Device

For safely managing your rope, you’ll want a good belay device. The Petzl GriGri is the gold standard – gives you that extra peace of mind when you’re belaying beginners or tackling harder routes. About $120 from Anaconda. Plus it’s got that satisfying click when it catches a fall!

📦 Carabiners

Stock up on locking and non-locking carabiners. You’ll need at least 4 locking ones for anchors and a dozen non-locking for general use. The DMM Aero is my fave – lightweight, strong, and the gate action is smooth as silk. Around $15 each from Rock and Ice.

📦 Climbing Apparel

Get some stretchy climbing pants that move with you – prAna Stretch Zion pants are perfect. For tops, quick-dry shirts are a must. I’ve been loving the Icebreaker Merino range – warm when it’s cool, breathable when it warms up during the day. About $80-$120 per item.

📦 First Aid Kit

Essential for any climbing trip. Get a climbing-specific first aid kit that includes bandages, antiseptic, blister treatment, and trauma supplies. The Adventure Medical Kit Climbing/Mountaineering is comprehensive and fits nicely in your pack. Around $60 from Katmandu.

📦 Guidebook

Don’t climb blind! Get the latest edition of ‘Victoria’s Best Climbs’ – it has all the classics and hidden gems across Western Victoria. You can pick it up at local outdoor stores or download the digital version for your phone. About $45 for the print version, super useful for finding those secret spots only locals know about!
