Ever wondered what it’s like to ride a wave in Margaret River? Here are my favourite beginner surfing spots in Australia’s ripper surf capital!

🔥 Ever wondered what it’s like to paddle out, catch your first wave, and ride it all the way to the shore? Mate, I’ve been there — and trust me, Margaret River’s got the perfect spots to make that dream a reality, even if you’re a total beginner!

📍 1️⃣ Caves Beach – The Ultimate Beginner’s Playground

This one’s got it all: gentle, consistent waves, soft sand landing, and zero crowds at low tide. I tried my first board here last arvo, and after just two fails, I popped up and stayed on for three glorious seconds! The reef just offshore keeps the waves nice and soft. Best time? Late morning to early afternoon — sun’s warm, water’s calm, and you won’t be battling the wind like in the morning.

📍 2️⃣ Surfers Point – Where the Magic Happens (and the Lessons Begin)

It’s smaller than it looks, but oh boy, this spot’s a ringer for beginners. The waves break right in front of the cliffside, so you’re not getting sucked out too far. I’ve seen first-timers actually stand up here after just 30 minutes of practice. Plus, there’s a little surf school right on the beach — their instructors are super patient, and the boards are free to borrow for the first session. Pro tip: Go mid-week — less footy fans and more space.

📍 3️⃣ The Bumps – For the Confident Newbie (But Still Beginner-Friendly)

Don’t let the name scare you — this is actually one of the most forgiving breaks in the region. The waves are a bit quicker, but they’re still short and forgiving. I took my sister here last weekend — she’d never surfed before — and she stood up on her second try! The beach is a bit more exposed, so keep an eye on the wind. Best for when you’re ready to move past the ‘paddling around’ phase but still want safety in numbers.

📍 4️⃣ Meelup Beach – Families, Friends & Barbecues Included

This spot’s my go-to for a full arvo vibe. Super wide beach, gentle waves, and the bonus of a proper picnic area with a barbie. I brought my mate’s 10-year-old last summer — she was riding her board in under an hour, and we had brekkie on the rocks after. No crowd, minimal shark risk (thanks to the lifeguards), and the water’s warm. Perfect for a chill day out with the crew — or even kids!

📋 Practical Info

📍 Margaret River, Western Australia 6285
🚗 From Perth, 2.5 hours by car via the Bussell Highway (approx 180km)
💰 $50 – $80 (includes board rental, surf lesson, and wetsuit if needed)

⏱️ Half-day (3-4 hours) ideal for first-timers

💡 Tips & Warnings

✅ Arrive early to grab a spot — especially on weekends. The Bumps and Caves can get busy by 11am!
❌ Don’t try to go in straight off the beach without a lesson — the currents here can be tricky for newbies.
⚠️ Always check the surf report (use ‘Surfline’ or ‘MagicSeaweed’) before heading out — some days the swell’s too strong for beginners.
