🔥 The morning mist clings to the cliff edges as the first rays of sun hit the Three Sisters, painting them in hues of orange and gold. Standing there, with the vast wilderness stretching out before you, you’ll feel a connection to this country like never before.
🗓️ Day 1: Sydney to the Blue Mountains
Start your adventure with a breezy drive from Sydney (about 2 hours) or jump on the train from Central Station – takes about 2 hours and is a ripper way to see the countryside. Once you arrive in Katoomba, grab some brekkie at a local cafe, then head straight to Echo Point for that iconic Three Sisters view. Pro tip: go early to beat the crowds! In the arvo, hit the Scenic Railway – it’s the steepest passenger railway in the world and bloody brilliant. End your day with a walk along the Wentworth Falls track – absolutely stunning when the water’s flowing.
🗓️ Day 2: Valley of the Waters
Get your hiking boots on today! The Valley of the Waters in Wentworth Falls is perfect for your first Aussie bushwalk. Start at the Conservation Hut and do the full loop – about 4 hours of moderate walking through rainforest and waterfalls. Pack some snags for a barbie at the Falls picnic area – there’s even free BBQs! Don’t forget your swimmers if it’s warm enough – some of those rock pools are perfect for a dip. Keep your eyes peeled for lorikeets and cockatoos – they’re everywhere!
🗓️ Day 3: Jenolan Caves Adventure
Today we’re heading underground! Jenolan Caves are about an hour’s drive from Katoomba and are Australia’s most spectacular limestone caves. Book a tour when you arrive – the Imperial Cave is great for beginners, but the Lucas Cave has that massive chamber that’ll blow your mind. After the cave tour, walk along the Grand Arch – it’s huge and makes you feel tiny! Pack a thermos of tea and some bikkies – there’s a lovely spot by the river for a proper Aussie break.
🗓️ Day 4: Kanangra to Boyd Plateau
For the more adventurous, today we’re heading to Kanangra. It’s a bit of a rough road to get there, but the views are worth it! The walk down to Kanangra Walls is a bit steep but manageable if you take your time. The real gem is the Boyd Plateau – it’s like stepping into another world with those massive granite tors. This walk is about 6 hours return, so pack plenty of water and some good tucker. The solitude up here is something special – you’ll feel a million miles from anywhere.
🗓️ Day 5: Wollemi Wilderness
Time to explore the lesser-known parts! The Wollemi area is wild and rugged – perfect for those wanting to get off the beaten track. Start at the Newnes Hotel (yes, there’s still a pub there!) and walk along the Wolgan River. The old coal mining ruins are fascinating, and the sandstone formations are spectacular. Keep an eye out for the Wollemi Pine – these trees were thought to be extinct until they were discovered here in 1994! It’s a proper Jurassic Park moment.
🗓️ Day 6: Return via the Bells Line of Road
Instead of heading back the way you came, take the scenic Bells Line of Road. Stop at Mount Tomah for the Botanic Garden – it’s got amazing views and cool climate plants. Then pop into Bilpin for some apple pie and cider – this is apple country! The road itself is beautiful with lots of lookouts and photo ops. If you’re feeling energetic, do the short walk to Pulpit Rock for panoramic views. This makes for a much more relaxed journey back to Sydney.
🗓️ Day 7: Sydney Harbour Farewell
No Aussie adventure is complete without seeing Sydney! Start at Bondi Beach for a morning surf lesson (they have great beginner options), then walk the coastal track to Bronte Beach – about 2 hours of pure coastal beauty. Grab fish and chips for lunch, then head to the city for a sunset ferry ride from Circular Quay. Seeing the Opera House and Harbour Bridge at golden hour is something you’ll never forget. Fair dinkum, it’s a beauty!
