🔥 Did you know that the Central Coast is home to over 400 bird species and is one of Australia’s top 10 biodiversity hotspots? This little slice of paradise between Sydney and Newcastle is an absolute ripper for wildlife lovers!
🎒 What You’ll Need
Before you head out, you’ll want to grab these essentials:
✅ Binoculars – Don’t skimp here, a decent pair makes all the difference
✅ Camera with zoom – For capturing those special moments
✅ Comfortable walking shoes – Some tracks can be a bit rough
✅ Sunscreen and hat – The sun can be brutal, even on cooler days
✅ Water bottle – Stay hydrated out there
✅ Field guide or bird ID app – Helps you spot and identify what you’re seeing
✅ Quiet enthusiasm – Wildlife gets spooked by loud noises, so keep it chill
1️⃣ Do Your Homework
First things first, mate – research where the wildlife hotspots are. I’d recommend checking out:
• Brisbane Water National Park – great for kangaroos and wallabies
• Wyrrabalong National Park – coastal wildlife galore
• Munmorah State Conservation Area – birdwatching paradise
• The Entrance – dolphins and marine life
Download the NSW National Parks app before you go – it’s got heaps good info about what’s been spotted recently and any alerts about closures or conditions.
2️⃣ Timing is Everything
Wildlife is most active during the golden hours:
• Dawn (6-8am) – Birds are singing, kangaroos are feeding
• Dusk (4-6pm) – Perfect for spotting nocturnal critters
• Avoid midday when the sun’s at its peak – most animals will be hiding
I’ve found that going on weekdays means fewer people, which equals more wildlife sightings. And always check the tide times if you’re doing coastal watching – low tide often exposes more marine life!
3️⃣ Be Patient and Observant
This is where most people stuff up, mate. Wildlife watching isn’t about ticking off a list – it’s about the experience.
• Move slowly and quietly – sudden movements scare everything away
• Look for signs – tracks, scat, feathers, disturbed vegetation
• Sit in one spot for at least 15-20 minutes – let the area settle
• Use your peripheral vision – animals often appear from the edges
• Listen – many animals announce their presence before you see them
Last weekend I sat by a creek for about half an hour and ended up seeing a platypus surface three times – totally worth the wait!
4️⃣ Capture Memories Responsibly
We all wanna get that epic shot, but there’s a right way and a wrong way:
• Use zoom instead of getting too close – stress can harm animals
• No flash photography – it can damage nocturnal animals’ eyesight
• Keep your distance – if you’re causing animals to change their behavior, you’re too close
• Share your sightings but don’t reveal exact locations – prevents overcrowding
I’ve got some ripper photos from my Canon with a telephoto lens – you don’t need fancy gear, just the right approach.
5️⃣ Respect the Environment
Leave no trace is the golden rule here:
• Take everything you bring in, including rubbish
• Stay on marked tracks to protect habitats
• Don’t feed wildlife – it messes with their natural behavior
• Keep dogs on leads – they can scare or even attack native animals
• If you see someone harming wildlife or habitat, report it to NPWS
The Central Coast’s environment is fragile, and we’re all responsible for protecting it for future generations.

💡 Tips & Warnings
✅ Download the ‘Birds in Backyards’ app before you go – it’s specifically designed for Australian bird identification.
❌ Don’t wear strong perfumes or deodorants – animals have a much stronger sense of smell and it can deter them.
⚠️ Watch out for snakes, especially in warmer months. Always watch where you step and keep dogs on leads.
