Hiking 101: Here are my favourite beginner-friendly trails in Great Ocean Road! 🥾

🔥 Did you know that over 2.5 million visitors explore the Great Ocean Road each year — and nearly 70% of them hit the trails for the first time? That’s right, mate, you’re not alone in wanting to walk these epic coastal paths. Whether you’re after a gentle stroll or a proper bush buster, I’ve got your back with the best starter trails along the route — no gear or experience needed!

📍 1️⃣ The Twelve Apostles Short Walk

This iconic trail is the ultimate intro to hiking on the Great Ocean Road. Just a 1.5km return walk through sandy paths and native scrub, it gives you jaw-dropping views of those towering limestone stacks. I did this last arvo with my cousin and her two kids — even the 6-year-old was stoked! The lookout’s right there at the start, so you can peek before you commit. Pro tip: Go early morning to beat the crowds and grab that golden sunrise shot. 🌅

📍 2️⃣ Loch Ard Gorge (Easy Loop)

This one’s a ripper for beginners who want a bit more of a bush feel. The 1.4km loop takes you through ferns, eucalypts, and down to a beautiful black sand beach. There’s a bit of a scramble on the way down, but it’s not steep — just a bit of a ‘hold on, mate!’ moment. Last time I went, I saw a wedge-tailed eagle soaring overhead. Totally mind-blowing. The best time? Midday sun warms up the rocks and it’s perfect for a quick picnic on the rocks.

📍 3️⃣ Gibson Steps & The Arch

Famed for its dramatic sea cliff views and the natural rock arch, this trail is a little more involved but still totally doable for first-timers. It’s roughly 2.6km round trip, with wooden steps and some steep bits, but there are plenty of resting spots. I’ve done this in a brekkie run and it’s a great way to get into the rhythm of hiking. Just wear grippy shoes — wet rocks are slippery, mate. And don’t miss the photo op at the arch at sunset. 🔥

📍 4️⃣ Bells Beach Coastal Trail (Family-Friendly Section)

If you’re after a chill coastal walk with a bit of history and ocean vibes, this stretch is for you. The 3km section from the car park to the surf club has gentle climbs and endless ocean views. I brought my dog here last year — he loved the sand and the breeze. There are picnic tables, toilets, and even a little info board about the area’s Aboriginal heritage. Super easy, super relaxing. Perfect for a family arvo stroll.
