🔥 Did you know that over 2.5 million visitors flock to Byron Bay every year to experience its crystal-clear waters and laid-back vibe? Well, after 5+ years exploring Australia’s coastline, I’ve narrowed down the absolute must-see spots that locals actually love!
1️⃣ Cape Byron Walking Track
The iconic walk to Australia’s most easterly point! This 3.7km loop offers breathtaking coastal views, incredible whale sightings (June-November), and that famous Byron Bay lighthouse. The sunrise from here is absolutely ripper – I’ve seen it 20+ times and it never gets old. Perfect for fitness levels with plenty of photo stops.
2️⃣ The Pass
Hands down the best snorkelling spot in Byron! Protected by the headland, this spot has calm waters teeming with tropical fish, turtles, and even the occasional friendly dolphin. The reef starts just 10m from shore, making it perfect for beginners. I’ve spotted over 15 different species here in one arvo session!
3️⃣ Wategos Beach
Byron’s hidden gem! This stunning little beach is tucked away around the corner from Main Beach and feels like a million miles from anywhere. The golden sand and crystal-clear water make it perfect for a morning dip before the crowds arrive. Pro tip: bring your brekkie and enjoy it on the rocks – absolutely heaps good!
4️⃣ Arakwal National Coast
This protected area offers some of the most pristine coastline in the region. The walking tracks here are less crowded but just as beautiful as the main spots. You’ll spot native wildlife like wallabies and sea birds while enjoying secluded beaches. I spent a whole day here last summer and barely saw 10 people!
5️⃣ Julian Rocks Marine Reserve
World-class diving and snorkelling just 10 minutes from shore! This unique rock formation creates two different ecosystems – one tropical and one temperate. I’ve seen everything from tiny nudibranchs to massive grey nurse sharks here. Best conditions are between November and May when the water is warmest.
6️⃣ Main Beach
The heart of Byron Bay! This stunning beach is perfect for swimming, surfing, or just soaking up the sun. The patrolled area makes it family-friendly, and the beachfront cafes are perfect for a post-swim coffee. I love coming here for sunset – the golden light over the water is bloody magical!
7️⃣ Suffolk Park Lookout
The best view of Byron Bay without the crowds! This lesser-known spot offers panoramic views of the coastline from Broken Head to Cape Byron. It’s perfect for sunrise or sunset when the colours reflect off the water. I discovered this spot last year and now it’s my go-to when I want to avoid the tourist masses!
