🔥 Just got back from 10 days of gravel riding across Australia’s wild heart with my crew, and mate, it was absolutely ripper! From dusty tracks to stunning coastlines, here’s how we did it.
🗓️ Day 1: Sydney Harbour Roll-Out
Start at The Rocks, grab a coffee from a local roaster, then bike down to Taronga Zoo. It’s an easy 15km ride along the harbour with ocean views that’ll have the kids grinning from ear to ear. Pack a picnic for sunset at Mrs Macquarie’s Point—properly iconic spot!
🗓️ Day 2: Blue Mountains Gravel Escape
Hit the M4 west and take the Great Western Highway to Leura. The gravel trails here are beginner-friendly but packed with charm. Try the Valley of the Waters loop (~20km). Keep an eye out for wallabies, mate—they’re everywhere!
🗓️ Day 3: Hunter Valley Gravel & Vines
North to the Hunter Valley, where gravel roads meet world-class wines. The Broke Station loop is 45km of rolling hills and scenic vistas. Bring your own lunch and enjoy a tasting session at a boutique cellar door. Pro tip: avoid weekends if you want peace!
🗓️ Day 4: Central Coast Gravel Trail Day
Head north to the Central Coast. The Nanaimo Rail Trail is perfect for families—flat, paved/gravel mix, and full of history. Stop at the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park for a picnic by the water. It’s flat, fast, and fun!
🗓️ Day 5: Byron Bay Beach & Coast Roll
Fly or drive to Byron Bay, then hit the Little Nimbin Loop (~35km). This is where it gets proper gravel—dirt, dust, and stunning headlands. End the day at Wategos Beach watching the sunset—it’s next level!
🗓️ Day 6: Byron to Lismore River Ride
Ride south along the Wilsons River. It’s a flat 25km gravel path with plenty of birdlife and quiet bushfire trails. Stop at Lismore for brekkie—try the local bakery on Byron Street!
🗓️ Day 7: Gold Coast Gravel Tracks
Hit the Gold Coast’s hinterland. The Springbrook National Park trails are technical but rewarding. Try the Cascade Circuit (~40km). It’s steep in parts, so bring gears that can climb! Pack snacks—there aren’t many shops up there.
🗓️ Day 8: Sunshine Coast Gravel Loop
North to the Sunshine Coast. The Glass House Mountains loop (~50km) is a gravel classic with views that’ll leave you speechless. Stop at Maroochy River for lunch and a paddle. The kids will love the riverside cafes!
🗓️ Day 9: Fraser Island Gravel Adventure
Fly to Hervey Bay, then catch the ferry to Fraser Island. It’s 4WD gravel and beach riding—pure adrenaline! Try the Central Range loop (~30km). It’s rugged, wild, and totally unforgettable. Book campsite in advance!
🗓️ Day 10: Return to Sydney & Wrap-Up
Fly back to Sydney and do a final 20km loop along the Harbour Bridge. Celebrate with fish and chips at The Rocks and a proper pub dinner. You’ve earned it!
