🔥 The car winds around the bend and suddenly the ocean opens up into this brilliant expanse of turquoise, framed by the iconic golden sandstone cliffs of the Sydney Harbour National Park. Last weekend, I found myself floating just above a school of silver bream, the sun dancing through the water, and honestly, it felt like discovering a whole different world right on the city’s doorstep.
🎒 What You’ll Need
Look, you don’t need to spend a fortune to get started, but having the right gear makes a massive difference. Grab a mask that doesn’t leak (test it in the shop first!), a snorkel with a comfy mouthpiece, and fins that fit snugly. If you’re feeling the chill a bit more than usual—especially in winter—grab a wetsuit or at least a rashie for sun protection. Don’t forget a mesh bag to carry it all and a bottle of water to stay hydrated!
1️⃣ Pick Your Spot & Check Conditions
Sydney’s got heaps of top spots, but you gotta pick the right one for the day. For absolute beginners, I’d always recommend Shelley Beach at Manly—it’s like swimming in an aquarium because it’s fully protected from the swell. Check the Bureau of Meteorology for wind and wave height. If the wind is howling from the north, stick to the southern beaches like Bare Island or Clovelly Pool. Always snorkel with a buddy and let someone know where you’re heading!
2️⃣ Prep Your Gear
Before you even get your toes wet, treat your mask! Spit into the lens, give it a rub with your finger, and rinse it out with seawater. This stops the fog from ruining your view. Pull your hair back if it’s long so it doesn’t get caught in the seal. There’s nothing worse than a leaky mask because of a stray strand of hair!
3️⃣ Enter Safely & Chill Out
Walk backwards into the water or wade in from the sand to protect your fins and your ankles from unexpected rocks. Once you’re waist-deep, pop your face in the water and take slow, rhythmic breaths through the snorkel. If you feel a bit panicked, just lift your head, float on your back, and have a breather. The key is to stay relaxed—the marine life is way more interested in doing its own thing than bothering you!
4️⃣ Explore the Underwater World
Now for the fun bit! Keep your arms by your sides and let your legs do the work with those fins. Kick from your hips, not your knees, for a smooth glide. Look under ledges and near the seagrass—that’s where the cute octopuses and weedy seadragons like to hang out. Remember, look but don’t touch! We want to keep these beautiful ecosystems pristine for everyone else.
5️⃣ Rinse & Refresh
After you’ve dried off on the sand (maybe with a snag from the nearby sausage sizzle), give all your gear a thorough rinse with fresh water. Saltwater ruins the silicone and straps if you leave it to dry. Check the beach for any rubbish you might see—even picking up one piece of plastic helps keep our beaches bloody beautiful!
