🔥 The morning mist lifts off Thredbo Valley as the first rays of sun hit the snow-capped peaks, revealing a winter wonderland that’s calling your name. This is the moment you’ve been waiting for – standing at the edge of adventure in Australia’s alpine playground!
1️⃣ Perisher Ski Resort
Australia’s largest ski field offers everything from gentle beginner slopes to challenging black runs. The views from the Kosciuszko Express are absolutely ripper, and the village atmosphere is heaps good. Last weekend I tried their new snowshoeing tour at sunset – bloody magic!
2️⃣ Thredbo Alpine Walk
This 6km return walk takes you through stunning alpine scenery to the top of Australia’s highest mountain, Mt Kosciuszko. The chairlift up saves your legs for the descent, and the summit views on a clear day are something else. Don’t forget your sunnies – the reflection off the snow is intense!
3️⃣ Charlotte Pass Ski Resort
For the ultimate Aussie snow experience, Charlotte Pass can’t be beaten. It’s the highest resort in Australia and has that authentic, laid-back vibe that reminds me of the good old days. The cross-country skiing here is heaps good and the snow quality is usually top-notch.
4️⃣ Yarrangobilly Caves
Just a short drive from the main ski fields, these limestone caves offer a completely different adventure. The thermal pool at the exit is the perfect way to warm up after exploring – I reckon it’s one of the best kept secrets in the Snowies!
5️⃣ Ski Tube to Bullocks Flat
This is an adventure in itself! The underground snow tube train is a unique experience that takes you straight to the snow fields. Perfect for families and those who don’t want the hassle of chains on their car.
6️⃣ Guthega Dam Cross-Country
When the main slopes are crowded, Guthega offers peaceful cross-country skiing with stunning backdrops. The frozen lake is like something out of a postcard, and it’s usually much quieter than the bigger resorts.
7️⃣ Summit Restaurant Experience
After a day on the slopes, hitting the Summit Restaurant at Mt Perisher for a hot chocolate and some mountain-top dining is an absolute must-do. The sunset views while you sip on a warm drink are unbeatable!
8️⃣ Snowy River Kayaking
In summer, the Snowy River transforms into a kayaking paradise. I did a guided tour last December and it was unreal – crystal clear water through stunning gorges. A totally different side to the Snowies!
9️⃣ Murray 1 Power Station Tour
For something completely different, check out this underground hydroelectric power station. The scale of the engineering is mind-blowing and the guides have some ripper stories about building the Snowy Mountains Scheme.
🔟 Dead Horse Gap Walking Track
This alpine walk offers incredible diversity – from snow gums to glacial lakes. The Aboriginal heritage sites along the way add a fascinating cultural layer to this natural wonder. Best done in summer when the wildflowers are out.
