🔥 Did you know that the Great Ocean Road region receives over 5.8 million visitors annually, with summer being the peak season for bushwalking adventures?
📍 Great Otway National Park
The Otways are an absolute ripper in summer! I’ve done heaps of walks here, and my fave is the Maits Rest Rainforest Walk. It’s only 800m but takes you through ancient ferns and massive myrtle beech trees. The best bit? It’s shaded most of the way, perfect for those hot summer days. Last weekend I spotted a lyrebird doing its impression of a chainsaw – true blue Aussie moment! There’s also the Melba Gully loop, which gets pretty dark at night so bring your torch if you’re doing it arvo.
📍 Cape Otway Lightstation Walk
This walk is a bit more challenging but bloody worth it! The lighthouse to the beacon lookout is about 3km return and gives you some of the best coastal views in Victoria. I did this last summer and spotted a seal colony just off the rocks. Word to the wise – it can get proper windy up there, so don’t forget your sunnies and a beanie ’cause the temp can drop quick. The walk back through the bush is magic when the sun’s setting.
📍 Apollo Bay to Marengo Walk
For a more relaxed arvo stroll, this 5km coastal path is heaps good. Starts right from Apollo Bay and follows the coastline through coastal heathland and along clifftops. I’ve seen heaps of kangaroos grazing here early morning. The best part? You can finish with fish and chips at the Marengo pub – perfect combo! In summer, the wildflowers are out in full bloom, so bring your camera for some Insta-worthy shots.
📍 The Twelve Apostles Coast Walk
This is the big one mate – the full 12km from Gibson Steps to the Twelve Apostles viewing area. I’d recommend breaking it into two parts unless you’re fairly fit. The views are absolutely stunning, especially early morning when the light’s hitting the stacks just right. Last summer I did this with a mate and we spotted dolphins playing in the waves below. Pro tip – start early ’cause it gets proper busy by mid-morning and the car parks fill up quick.
📊 Quick Comparison Table
Here’s the lowdown on each spot:
🌿 Maits Rest: 800m, easy, 30-45 mins, shaded, great for families
🏮 Cape Otway: 3km, moderate, 1.5-2 hours, exposed, best for morning
🌊 Apollo Bay: 5km, easy, 1.5-2 hours, coastal, perfect for arvo
🗻 Twelve Apostles: 12km, hard, 4-5 hours, clifftop, best sunrise
All of these are dog-friendly on leash, but remember to carry out what you carry in!
🏆 My Top Pick
If I had to pick just one for summer, it’d gotta be the Twelve Apostles Coast Walk. Yeah, it’s the longest, but the sheer beauty of walking along that coastline with the Southern Ocean crashing below? Bloody unreal! I did it last December and was lucky enough to spot some whales breaching offshore. Just make sure you start at dawn to beat the crowds and the heat. Pack extra water and some snacks – you’ll thank me later!
