🔥 Ever wondered where to find the most epic photo ops in Oz? I’ve spent the last five years chasing sunrises and sunsets all over this massive country, and let me tell you, Spring is absolutely the go time for snapping pics! Here are my top 15 picks for photography this season – ranked!
1️⃣ The Pinnacles, Nambung National Park
📍 Cervantes, WA | ⏱️ 2-3 hours
These ancient limestone pillars rising out of the yellow sand look alien, mate. Best time is golden hour—the colours get absolutely wild! I shot there last season and the contrast was mind-blowing.
2️⃣ Cradle Mountain, Tasmania
📍 Cradle Mountain, TAS | ⏱️ Half day
The reflection of the jagged peaks in Dove Lake is legendary. It can be bloody freezing in the morning, so wrap up warm, but that mirror shot is worth every shiver.
3️⃣ Great Ocean Road, Victoria
📍 Princetown, VIC | ⏱️ Full day
You can’t skip the 12 Apostles. Sunrise is the money shot here—beats the crowds and gives you that moody orange glow hitting the stacks. A proper ripper of a location.
4️⃣ Hyams Beach, Jervis Bay
📍 Hyams Beach, NSW | ⏱️ 2-4 hours
Famous for having the whitest sand in the world. The turquoise water contrast makes for killer portraits. Just watch your exposure settings or the sand might blow out!
5️⃣ Lake Hillier, Esperance
📍 Middle Island, WA | ⏱️ Flight tour (half day)
A bright pink lake? Bloody oath! You can only see it properly from the air, but it’s worth every cent for that unique aerial shot. Looks like a bubblegum spill!
6️⃣ Byron Bay Lighthouse
📍 Byron Bay, NSW | ⏱️ 1-2 hours
Most easterly point of Aus. Catching a surfer riding a wave underneath the lighthouse at sunrise is the ultimate ‘golden’ shot. Classic Byron vibe.
7️⃣ Kangaroo Island Remarkable Rocks
📍 Flinders Chase, SA | ⏱️ 2 hours
These granite boulders look like modern art sculptures perched on the ocean. The orange lichen glow at sunset is something else, mate. Pure magic.
8️⃣ Royal National Park Coast Track
📍 Bundeena, NSW | ⏱️ Full day hike
My local fave! The Wedding Cake Rock is iconic (and fenced off now), but the cliffs along the track offer heaps of dramatic angles without the crowds.
9️⃣ Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), NT
📍 Uluru-Kata Tjuta NP, NT | ⏱️ 3-4 hours
Often overshadowed by Uluru, but these domes are stunning for photography. The Valley of the Winds walk gives you intimate textures and colours you won’t believe.
🔟 Freycinet Peninsula & Wineglass Bay
📍 Coles Bay, TAS | ⏱️ Half day
That curve of white sand and blue water is postcard perfect. Hike up to the lookout for the wide shot, but don’t miss the detail shots of the pink granite rocks.
✨ The Grampians National Park
📍 Halls Gap, VIC | ⏱️ Weekend trip
Rugged mountain ranges, wildflowers in spring, and epic lookouts like The Pinnacle. It’s a landscape photographer’s playground. Heaps good variety!
✨ Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge
📍 Katherine, NT | ⏱️ Half day
Cruising or canoeing through here gives you a totally different perspective. The sheer rock walls reflecting in the calm water—unreal!
✨ Blue Mountains National Park
📍 Katoomba, NSW | ⏱️ Full day
The Three Sisters are the classic shot, but try going around sunset for some moody mist. There are so many lookouts you’ll be spoilt for choice.
✨ Noosa National Park Coastal Track
📍 Noosa, QLD | ⏱️ 2-3 hours
Head out for sunrise and you might spot a koala in the trees plus waves crashing against the coastal pandanus. Very lush and tropical vibes.
✨ Rottnest Island
📍 Rottnest Island, WA | ⏱️ Full day
Quokkas! Get that selfie with the world’s happiest animal. The bays here have water so clear it looks fake—snorkelling shots are a must too.
