Did you know koalas sleep up to 20 hours a day? Just got back from 3 days on the Great Ocean Road! 🐨

πŸ”₯ Did you know koalas sleep up to 20 hours a day? That makes spotting them a bit of a mission, but I just got back from an epic 3-day trip on the Great Ocean Road and the wildlife was absolutely unreal! mate, you won’t believe how close we got to roos, koalas, and even a few echidnas.

πŸ—“οΈ Day 1: Torquay to Kennett River

Kick off your arvo in Torquay grabbing a coffee before hitting the road. The real magic starts at Anglesea Golf Club – it’s open to the public and absolutely packed with Eastern Grey Kangaroos grazing on the fairways. It’s a ripper spot for photos without scaring them off. Then, cruise down to Kennett River. There’s a spot along the Great Ocean Road near the picnic area where the gum trees are full of wild koalas. Seriously, you just look up and they’re everywhere chilling out. Finish the day with a sunset at Lorne beach.

πŸ—“οΈ Day 2: Cape Otway Wildlife Wonderland

Start early and head down to Cape Otway Lighthouse. This area is an absolute hotspot for wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled on the trees for koalas moving around (they move more in the morning). The lighthouse grounds are great for spotting wallabies and birdlife too. In the arvo, head to Melba Gully. Do the ‘Walk of the Giants’ and keep quiet – you might spot a platypus in the creek if you’re lucky! I saw one last time, it was heaps good. Make sure you’re wearing sturdy shoes though, track can get slippery.

πŸ—“οΈ Day 3: Port Campbell & The Twelve Apostles

Before you hit the famous sights, take a detour to Tower Hill Reserve near Warrnambool. It’s nested inside a dormant volcano and teeming with emus, koalas, and kangaroos. It’s like a free zoo! After lunch, drive back up to Port Campbell National Park. While everyone is looking at the rocks, check the cliffs and ocean. You can often spot penguins coming in at twilight or seals lounging on the rocks off the Apostles. Finish the trip watching the sunset over the limestone stacks.

πŸ’‘ Tips & Warnings

βœ… βœ… Pack binoculars – you’ll spot way more high up in the trees.
βœ… βœ… Drive slowly at dusk – roos love to hop out on the road!
❌ ❌ Don’t feed the animals. It messes with their digestion and makes them rely on humans.
⚠️ ⚠️ Watch out for snakes in warmer months, especially in the long grass at Cape Otway.
