Trail Running Essentials | My Favourite Grampians Spots! ποΈ
π₯ G’day! After 5+ years of getting lost (in a good way!) on trails around Oz, I reckon the Grampians is an absolute ripper for trail running. Here are my favourite trail running spots in the Grampians!
π The Pinnacle Lookout Trail
This is my absolute go-to when I wanna feel like I’m on top of the world! The trail starts from the Wonderland car park and is about 4.2km return. It’s a proper solid climb with some rock scrambling near the top, but bloody hell, the view is worth every drop of sweat. You get this insane 360-degree panorama of the whole Grampians range. Last time I was up there, I saw a couple of wallabies having a brekkie at sunrise β pure magic! The trail is well-marked but can get slippery after rain, so watch your footing.
π Mount William Summit Track
If you’re after a longer run, this is your ticket. It’s the highest point in the Grampians at 1,167 metres! The track is about 9km return and it’s a steady grind the whole way β perfect for building that endurance. I usually take about 2-3 hours depending on how many photo stops I make. The terrain is a mix of rocky fire trail and single track through some beautiful alpine vegetation. Pro tip: go on a clear day and you can literally see for miles β all the way to the Pyrenees on a good day!
π Brambuk Cultural Centre Loop
Alright, for beginners or if you’re running with the family, this one’s heaps good. It’s a nice easy 3km loop that starts and finishes at the Brambuk Cultural Centre. The track is mostly flat with a few gentle undulations β perfect for getting your trail legs without killing yourself. I love this one for an arvo shakeout run. You’ll learn a bit about the local Jardwadjali and Djab Wurrung culture along the way too. Plus, there’s a cracking cafΓ© at the cultural centre for a post-run coffee!
π The Grand Canyon Circuit
Don’t let the name fool ya β it’s not THE Grand Canyon, but it’s still pretty epic! This is about 6km of pure adventure running. You’ll be ducking through rock overhangs, scrambling up stone steps, and running alongside these massive sandstone cliffs. It connects up with the Pinnacle trail if you’re feeling extra keen. I did this one last winter and the winter light hitting the orange rock was just unreal. It’s moderately challenging with some technical sections, but so much fun!

If I had to pick just one (tough choice!), I’d say the Pinnacle Lookout Trail takes the cake. It’s got that perfect mix of challenge and reward, and honestly, you can’t beat that view for a mid-run brekkie spot. It’s the one I always take my visiting mates on when they wanna experience the real Grampians magic!

π From Melbourne, it’s about 3 hours drive (260km) via the Western Highway. From Ballarat, you’re looking at 1.5 hours (150km). All trailheads are accessible by 2WD, but a higher clearance vehicle helps for some car parks.
π° Free entry to the national park! Just need to pay for parking at some spots (usually $13/day).
π Best running times are sunrise to about 10am, or from 3pm onwards to avoid the midday heat. Spring (Sep-Nov) and Autumn (Mar-May) are primo seasons.

Always carry at least 1L of water β even on ‘short’ runs. The Australian bush can be deceptive!

Download offline maps before you go. Phone reception can be patchy in the gullies.
β Don’t forget your sunnies and sunscreen β even on overcast days, that Aussie UV is no joke!
β οΈ Watch out for snakes in warmer months! Most times they’ll clear off, but make plenty of noise when running through long grass.
