π₯ The smell of damp eucalyptus and rich volcanic soil fills your nose as morning mist clings to the valley floor β and now there’s a fresh way to experience it all. A ripper new trail has just opened up in the Yarra Valley, and honestly, it’s gonna be an absolute game-changer for anyone keen on exploring this stunning part of Victoria.
π The Announcement
Alright folks, here’s the exciting bit β Yarra Ranges National Park has officially unveiled a brand new 12km walking track that’s been years in the making! The ‘Ridge to River Trail’ connects the lush fern gullies near Healesville all the way down to the Yarra River. It’s been designed with sustainability in mind, so we’re talking minimal impact on the environment while still giving you those jaw-dropping views. I reckon it’s about time we got another cracker of a trail in this region β the Yarra Valley’s always been a favourite for road trips, and this just adds another reason to visit!
β Key Features
So what makes this trail special? Here’s the lowdown:
β’ **Three lookouts** with panoramic views of the valley and distant ranges β perfect for that Insta snap
β’ **Grade 3 difficulty** β manageable for most fitness levels but still gets the heart pumping
β’ **Wheelchair-accessible sections** near the start, making it inclusive for more peeps
β’ **Interpretive signage** sharing the cultural and environmental history of the area
β’ **Creek crossings** with neat little bridges β kids will love ’em
β’ **Wildlife galore** β expect to see kangaroos, wallabies, and heaps of birdlife
The trail’s been built to showcase the best of the Yarra Valley’s diverse ecosystems, from tall mountain ash forests to riparian zones along the river.
π When & Where
The Ridge to River Trail officially opened on March 21, 2026 β so it’s literally brand spanking new! The trailhead is located at the existing Badger Weir picnic area, about 6km east of Healesville. Access is via Maroondah Highway, and there’s a decent-sized carpark that’s been expanded to cope with the expected crowds.
Best time to go? Early morning or late arvo for those golden hour vibes and to avoid the midday heat. Spring and autumn are gonna be absolutely stunning with wildflowers or changing leaves.
π° Pricing
Here’s the best bit β it’s completely FREE! No entry fees, no parking charges. Just rock up and enjoy. That said, if you wanna support the ongoing maintenance of the park, you can make a donation to Parks Victoria or grab something from the visitor centre in Healesville.
If you’re planning a full road trip in the Yarra Valley (which I highly recommend), factor in costs for wineries, cafes, and maybe the Healesville Sanctuary if wildlife’s your thing.
π‘ Tips & Warnings
β
Bring plenty of water and snacks β there are no facilities along the trail, only at the start
β
Wear sturdy shoes with good grip, especially after rain when those creek crossings can get slippery
β οΈ Check the Parks Victoria website for any temporary closures after severe weather β new trails can be prone to maintenance in the first few months
β Don’t feed the wildlife β those kangaroos might look friendly, but human food isn’t good for ’em
