🔥 The smell of damp earth and eucalyptus fills your nostrils as you push through the first tricky section of singletrack, your heart pumping with adrenaline – this is the mountain biking experience Melbourne locals live for!
1️⃣ Yarra Valley Trail
The absolute ripper for a day trip from Melbourne! This trail offers a bit of everything – forested sections, river crossings, and some proper challenges. Last weekend I took my mate here who’s just getting into mountain biking and he absolutely killed it on the intermediate sections. The views of the valley when you hit the higher points are unreal! 📍 Yarra Valley, Victoria 3777 | ⏱️ Half day to full day
2️⃣ Lysterfield Park
Seriously heaps good for those early morning sessions before the crowds roll in. I’ve been coming here for years and it’s got some of the most diverse terrain around. The flow trails are smooth as butter, but if you’re after a bit more challenge, the rocky sections will test your skills. Plus, it’s only 45 minutes from the CBD – perfect for a quick hit after work! 📍 Lysterfield Park, Narre Warren South, Victoria 3156 | ⏱️ 2-4 hours
3️⃣ Kinglake National Park
Bloody hell, this place has some of the best singletrack in Victoria! After the fires, the trails have come back stronger than ever. The climbing is proper leg-burning, but the downhill sections are so worth it. I did the Kinglake Loop last season and was absolutely buggered but stoked the whole way. The scenery is just epic – think fern gullies and mountain vistas. 📍 Kinglake National Park, Victoria 3757 | ⏱️ Full day
4️⃣ Thomson River Trail
For a proper adventure, this one’s a cracker! It’s a bit of a drive from Melbourne (about 2.5 hours), but once you’re there, you’re in for a treat. The river crossings are heaps fun (bring your sunnies for the spray!), and the forest sections are so dense you’ll feel like you’re in another world. Last time I went, we spotted heaps of native wildlife including some cheeky cockatoos. 📍 Thomson River, Gippsland, Victoria 3851 | ⏱️ Full day
5️⃣ You Yangs Regional Park
The go-to spot when you want some proper techy terrain. These granite peaks have some challenging climbs and rocky descents that’ll test your skills. I love it here because it’s not too far from Melbourne but feels like a proper escape. The sunset sessions are unreal – nothing better than watching the sun go down over the bay after a solid ride. 📍 You Yangs Regional Park, Little River, Victoria 3211 | ⏱️ Half day
6️⃣ Baw Baw National Park
If you’re after alpine action, this is your spot! The trails here are a bit different to what you’ll find elsewhere – more exposed and with some proper climbs. I did the Baw Baw Summit trail last year and the views from the top are absolutely breathtaking. The best part? In summer, you can finish your ride with a swim in one of the nearby alpine lakes. 📍 Baw Baw National Park, Victoria 3833 | ⏱️ Full day
7️⃣ Mornington Peninsula
For something completely different, the peninsula offers coastal trails with ocean views! The terrain is mostly sandy and a bit more technical than what you’ll find in the mountains, but it’s a proper change of scenery. I love riding here on a warm arvo – you can finish up with a swim at one of the beaches. The Red Hill area has some of the best flowing trails around. 📍 Mornington Peninsula, Victoria 3939 | ⏱️ Half day
