π₯ Standing at the base of Mackenzie Falls, the sheer scale of the Grampians hits you before the first climb even begins. If you’re planning to tackle these ancient rock formations, don’t forget these 5 essentials to keep your trip safe and epic!
π₯Ύ Grip-It Shoes & Chalk Bag
First up, gear. The Grampians are all about friction and techniqueβno huge overhangs here. You need shoes with sticky rubber (Vibram is your mate) for those flat sandstone slabs. Don’t forget a chalk bag! The dry Victorian summer air makes hands slippery fast, and keeping them dry is key to not falling off mid-route. I always pack a small bag of liquid chalk too for those humid mornings.
π§ Harness & Dynamic Rope Kit
This is non-negotiable. Whether you’re leading or top-roping, a certified climbing harness that fits snugly is crucial. For the Grampians, I recommend a 60m dynamic ropeβit gives enough reach for most multi-pitch routes near Halls Gap. Check your carabiners and quickdraws before you go; salt air can corrode cheap metal. Pro tip: Bring a belay device that handles both lead and top-rope easily, like an ATC Guide.
π Hydration Station (3L+)
Listen to me closely: the Grampians get HOT. Even in winter, a sunny day on exposed rock faces can dehydrate you quicker than you think. Pack at least 3 litres of water per person. I always add an electrolyte tablet or two to my bottleβsaves you from those post-climb headaches. Don’t rely on finding water sources; most campsites are dry.
π¦ Sun & Bug Shield
Australia’s sun is no joke, and the rock reflects it back at you double. High SPF sunscreen, a wide-brim hat (for when you’re not clipping in), and polarised sunnies are mandatory. Also, pack mosquito repellent! The scrub around the base of the climbs is home to plenty of biting insects, especially in the arvo. I learned that the hard way on my first trip to Spean Bridge.
π± Offline Maps & First Aid Kit
Mobile coverage in the Grampians is patchy at best. Download offline maps from AllTrails or Landgate before you leave home. More importantly, carry a proper first aid kit including blister plasters (Compeed are lifesavers), antiseptic, and a tourniquet for those rare but serious rope burn incidents. Always let someone know your route plan before you head out.
