Hiking 101: Here are my favourite beginner-friendly trails on the Great Ocean Road! ๐Ÿฅพ

๐Ÿ”ฅ Did you know that over 2.5 million visitors explore the Great Ocean Road each year โ€” and most of them start with a short, ripper hike? Here are my favourite beginner-friendly trails on the Great Ocean Road!

๐Ÿ“ 1. Twelve Apostles Visitor Carpark Trail

This is the absolute go-to for first-timers โ€” just a 5-minute stroll from the carpark to the main viewing platform. You get jaw-dropping views of the iconic limestone stacks without breaking a sweat. I did this last arvo with my niece, and she was in awe! Perfect for families, sunrise lovers, or anyone who just wants to feel the ocean breeze without the big commitment. Thereโ€™s even a short boardwalk with info signs โ€” heaps good for learning about the geology.

๐Ÿ“ 2. Loch Ard Gorge Short Loop

About 30 minutes from the main carpark, this 1.2km loop is a hidden gem. Itโ€™s quieter than the Apostles, has a bit more bush feel, and the gorge is like something out of a movie. I hiked it after brekkie with my mate, and we spotted echidnas! The path is well-maintained, and itโ€™s super easy for beginners. Pro tip: Bring a camera โ€” the waterfalls and rock formations are straight-up Instagram gold.

๐Ÿ“ 3. Bells Beach Coastal Trail (Sunset Section)

Okay, this oneโ€™s for when you want to mix in a bit of surf culture with your hike. Just walk the coastal path from the Bells Beach carpark towards the breakers โ€” itโ€™s about 1.5km and flat as a pancake. I did this in the arvo last week, and the sunset was bloody spectacular. Youโ€™ll get views of surfers riding the waves, sea cliffs, and even a few dolphins sometimes. Not too many people, so itโ€™s peaceful and super relaxing.

๐Ÿ“ 4. Otway Fly Treetop Adventure Trail (Beginner Path)

If youโ€™re after something a little different, check out the short treetop trail here. Itโ€™s not a full hike, but itโ€™s a fantastic intro to forest hiking with 100m of elevated walkways and a little canopy feel. You still get the buzz of nature, and thereโ€™s zero steep bits โ€” ideal for kids or anyone nervous about heights. I tested it with my sister-in-law last month โ€” she was thrilled and said it felt like being in a movie!

๐Ÿ’ก Tips & Warnings

โœ… Pack a light backpack with water, snacks, and sunnies โ€” even on cloudy days, the sunโ€™s strong up there!
โŒ Donโ€™t skip the walking shoes โ€” even on easy trails, the groundโ€™s uneven and slippery near the coast.
โš ๏ธ Stay on marked paths โ€” the cliffs are dangerous, especially in fog or after rain. The oceanโ€™s powerful, and the rocks are slick!
