Ever wondered what it’s like to dive beneath the waves in Margaret River? Here’s exactly how I did it… 🀿

πŸ”₯ Ever wondered what it’s like to explore the underwater paradise hidden along Western Australia’s stunning coastline? What if I told you that Margaret River isn’t just about world-class wine and surf breaks, but also home to some of the most incredible temperate diving you’ll ever experience?

πŸŽ’ What You’ll Need

Before you even dip a toe in the Indian Ocean, you need to sort your gear. If you’re a newbie, don’t stress about buying a full kit yet. Most dive shops in the region have top-notch hire gear. However, if you’ve got your own mask, snorkel, and fins (MSF), bring ’em alongβ€”nothing beats a mask that fits your face perfectly! For the colder months (which is actually the best time for visibility), you’ll definitely want a thick wetsuitβ€”think 7mm with a hood. It might look like overkill, but once you’re down there for 45 minutes, you’ll be thanking me. Oh, and don’t forget your dive certification card (C-Card) if you’re not doing a Discover Scuba course.

1️⃣ Pick Your Spot & Book

Margaret River isn’t just one dive site; it’s a whole region of gems. You’ve got the Busselton Jetty just up the road which is an absolute must-do for underwater photosβ€”it’s like an underwater forest! Then there’s the rugged beauty of the Cape Naturaliste limestone reefs. I’d recommend hitting up a local operator like ‘Cape Dive’ or ‘Dive Busselton Jetty’. They know the conditions better than anyone. Since we’re in 2026, booking online a few weeks ahead is smart, especially if you’re planning a trip during the Australian winter months (June-August) when the visibility is absolutely unrealβ€”often pushing 30 meters! Seriously, book it in, mate.

2️⃣ Sort Your Certification (Or Do A DSD)

If you’re already Open Water certified, you’re sweet to goβ€”just bring your logbook. But if you haven’t dived before, no dramas! You can do a ‘Discover Scuba Dive’ (DSD). It’s a taster session where an instructor holds your hand (literally) and shows you the ropes. You’ll do a quick briefing, practise a few skills in shallow water, and then boomβ€”you’re off exploring the reef. It’s the perfect way to see if you’re hooked without committing to a full course straight away. I did my first dive this way and was instantly addicted.

3️⃣ The Pre-Dive Prep

Rock up to the shop with plenty of time. You’ll need to fill out some paperwork (medical questionnaire is standard). Then it’s gear fitting time. Make sure that wetsuit is snug but not cutting off circulation! Once you’re kitted up, you’ll likely head to the boat ramp or shore entry. This is where the nerves might kick in a bit, but just breathe. Chat with your dive buddy and the crewβ€”they’re legends and will help you relax. Don’t forget to take seasickness tablets if you’re doing a boat dive and you’re even slightly prone to getting green around the gills. Better safe than sorry, mate!

4️⃣ Take the Plunge

This is itβ€”the moment of truth. Giant stride off the boat or roll backward off the RIB. Once you’re in the water, give the OK signal to your buddy and descend slowly. Equalise your ears early and often. As you drop down, the world changes. The light filters through, and suddenly you’re surrounded by schools of fish, vibrant corals, and maybe even a cheeky seal or two if you’re lucky! Keep your breathing calm and slowβ€”air conservation is key. Look but don’t touch, keep your fins off the bottom, and just soak it all in. It’s a ripper feeling!

5️⃣ Post-Dive Debrief

After your safety stop and surfacing, climb back on board and get out of that gear. The stoke levels will be high! This is the best time to log your dives and chat with the crew about what you saw. They’ll usually point out fish IDs and share stories. Once you’re back at the shop, hose down your gear if you hired it, and then head straight to the pub or a brewery. Nothing tastes better than a cold pint after a day under the sea. You’ve earned it!
