🔥 Did you know that over 70% of Sydney’s best surf breaks are completely free to access? As someone who’s spent countless hours chasing waves along our coastline, I’ve found some absolute ripper spots that won’t cost you a cent!
🏄 North Avalon Beach
This spot is a local’s favourite for good reason! The waves here are heaps consistent and perfect for intermediates. I’ve had some of my best sessions here, especially when the southerly’s pumping. The beach itself is beautiful with plenty of parking (free, obviously) and a grassy area to chill out between sets.
🌊 Narrabeen Beach
Narrabeen is a bit of a legend when it comes to Sydney surf spots. The north end is where you wanna be – it’s more protected and generally less crowded. It’s perfect for longboarding and the water’s usually pretty warm. I’ve seen some epic sunrise sessions here that you just can’t beat!
🏝️ Copacabana Beach
A bit further up the Central Coast but absolutely worth the trip! Copacabana has a lovely, relaxed vibe and the waves are super friendly for beginners. The beach is huge so you’ll always find your own space. Last weekend I was here and scored perfect 3-foot waves all by myself – absolute bliss!
🏖️ Curl Curl Beach
North Curl Curl is my go-to spot when I want reliable waves without the crowds. The beach is gorgeous with a natural rock pool that’s perfect for a quick dip between sessions. It’s well-shaded in the arvo which makes it perfect for those summer sessions when the sun’s blazing.
🌅 Dee Why Beach
Dee Why Point is a bit more advanced but if you’re up for the challenge, it’s worth it! The left-hander here can get seriously good when the conditions are right. Even if you’re not surfing, the beach is stunning and there’s plenty of space to watch the pros from the rocks.
💰 Money-Saving Tips
✅ Pack your own brekkie and lunch – most of these spots have great picnic spots
✅ Bring a reusable water bottle – saves heaps and better for the environment
✅ Check the tides before you go – saves you from wasting petrol on days when the conditions are rubbish
✅ Carpool with mates – splits the petrol cost and makes the trip more fun
⭐ Nice to Have
✅ Portable speaker for some tunes between sets
✅ Portable shade tent for those really hot days
✅ GoPro to capture your epic sessions
✅ Phone waterproof pouch – you’ll thank me when you wipe out!
❌ Leave These Behind
❌ Expensive jewelry – it’ll get salty and sandy
❌ Glass bottles – dangerous for other surfers and the environment
❌ Your valuables – only bring what you need and keep them hidden
❌ Expectations – surf conditions change daily so just go with the flow!
