🔥 The plane touches down on Fraser Island and suddenly you’re surrounded by crystal-clear waters, pristine beaches and the iconic coloured sand formations that make this place so bloody special!
🚗 4WD Hire
You absolutely need a proper 4WD to tackle Fraser Island’s sandy tracks. I’ve tried heaps of options but the Toyota Land Cruiser or Prado from Fraser Island 4WD Hire are ripper – they’re built for these conditions. Prices start around $250/day but it’s worth every cent when you’re cruising along Seventy-Five Mile Beach!
🏕️ Camping Gear
For Fraser camping, grab a good quality tent that handles wind – I learned that the hard way during a wild night at Central Station! The Blackwolf Turbo Tent is heaps good for quick setup. Don’t forget a portable gas stove for brekkie and a good esky to keep your beers cold while watching the sunset.
🐨 Wildlife Photography Kit
You’ll want to capture those dingoes and other wildlife properly. I use a Canon EOS R6 with a 100-400mm lens but you can get great shots with a Sony A6400 too. A polarising filter is essential for those crystal-clear lake shots and a spare battery is a must – you’ll be snapping heaps!
🏄 Beach & Water Gear
For the surf breaks at Indian Head and Champagne Pools, grab a decent boogie board or soft-top surfboard. I picked up a FCS Rascal for $180 which is perfect for beginners. Don’t forget reef shoes for rocky areas and a good dry bag for keeping your gear safe during boat trips.
🧴 Sun & Protection
This is non-negotiable mate! The Fraser sun is no joke. I use zinc cream (Surf Mud is the best), high-UPF rashies, and a wide-brimmed hat. Throw in a quality first-aid kit too – I had to patch up a mate after a run-in with a stinger jellyfish last season!
