π₯ The car winds around the bend and suddenly, the roar of city traffic is replaced by the crisp hum of gravel tires on dirt. Just got back from 10 days in Australia with the fam, and let me tell youβit was an absolute ripper!
ποΈ Days 1-2: Sydney Base & Harbour Gravel
We kicked off the trip in Sydney, mate. Start at The Breakwater in Watsons Bay for a flat 4km loopβperfect for getting the kids’ legs used to gravel. Then, head up to North Head Sanctuary for some serious views of the harbour entrance. It’s not too steep, and the history is heaps interesting for older kids. Stay in Bondi for the vibeβit’s got everything from cool cafes to surf lessons.
ποΈ Days 3-4: Hunter Valley Wine & Dirt Roads
Drive north to the Hunter Valley. The key here is sticking to the unsealed roads like Mount View Road or Denison Road. They’re wide, relatively smooth, and offer stunning vineyard views. Stop at a few wineries that allow dogsβthey’re usually super family-friendly too. Grab some local cheese and bread for a picnic by the lake in Pokolbin.
ποΈ Days 5-6: Blue Mountains & Waterfalls
Heading west to the Blues. We stuck to the lower trails like the Mountainside Walk. It’s mostly flat, gravel-heavy in sections, and takes you past those iconic waterfalls like Wentworth Falls. The air is crisp here! We stayed in Leura, which has some of the best bakeries in NSW. Don’t skip a ride up the Scenic World railway if the little ones get tired of riding.
ποΈ Days 7-8: Coast to Coast β Byron Bay Loop
Fly down to Gold Coast, drive north to Byron. The Byron Bay coastal gravel loop is stunningβthink rugged headlands meeting turquoise water. Ride along the coastline track near Cape Byron Lighthouse. It’s breezy, but the views are unbeatable. Make sure you pack layers! The weather here changes fast. Stay in Mullumbimby for a more rustic, off-grid feel.
ποΈ Days 9-10: Gold Coast Hinterland & Home
Last few days, we hit the Gold Coast hinterland. The Scenic Rim trails are fantastic for intermediate gravel riders. It’s a mix of loose dirt and hard-packed tracks through rainforest edges. End the trip with a relaxing surf lesson at Burleigh Heads before heading to the airport from Brisbane.
