The scent of eucalyptus hits you before you even see them… Just Got Back from 4 Days in the Blue Mountains and Wow! πŸ”οΈ

πŸ”₯ The mist clings to your skin as golden sunlight breaks through the valley, and somewhere below, a lyrebird calls out. That was my morning, every morning, for four absolutely ripper days in the Blue Mountains. Honestly didn’t wanna come home!

πŸ—“οΈ Day 1: Katoomba & The Icons

Start early, mates! Grab a coffee in Katoomba town (check out The Little H for a ripper brew) then head straight to Echo Point by 8am. Trust me, you’ll thank me when you see the Three Sisters without the crowds. Spend the morning doing the Giant Stairway walk down to the valley floor – it’s steep but bloody worth it! Arvo: Check out Scenic World if you wanna cheat and take the cable car back up (no judgement here). Evening: Wander Katoomba’s vintage shops and grab dinner at The Carrington Hotel. Proper old-school charm!

πŸ—“οΈ Day 2: Wentworth Falls & Leura

This was probably my fave day! Morning: Hit up Wentworth Falls – the National Pass walk is absolutely stunning but check if it’s open (been some closures for maintenance). Even just the cliff top walks are gorgeous. Pack some sangas for a picnic overlooking the falls. Arvo: Drive 15 mins to Leura – this place is adorable! Walk Leura Mall, grab some fudge from the famous lolly shop, and definitely hit up Leura Cascades for a cheeky swim if it’s warm. Evening: Dinner at Leura Gourmet. Their local wine selection is heaps good!

πŸ—“οΈ Day 3: Blackheath & The Grand Canyon

Right, today’s the adventure day! Morning: The Grand Canyon Track from Blackheath – give yourself 4-5 hours. It’s challenging but hands down one of the best walks in NSW. You’ll descend into actual canyon walls with ferns and waterfalls. Magic! Pack heaps of water and snacks. Arvo: Reward yourself at the Blackheath Bakery (their pies are legendary). Then check out Govetts Leap Lookout – the views are bonkers. Evening: If you’ve got energy, Evans Lookout at sunset. Otherwise, just collapse at your accommodation like I did!

πŸ—“οΈ Day 4: Jenolan Caves & Heading Home

Morning: Drive out to Jenolan Caves – it’s about 45 mins from Blackheath but the road is winding so take your time! Do a cave tour (I reckon the Lucas Cave is the best all-rounder). The limestone formations will blow your mind. Arvo: Check out the Blue Lake outside the caves – super blue and very instagrammable! Start heading back to Sydney via the Bells Line of Road if you want a different route. Stop at Bilpin for apples and cider on the way home. Perfect end to a top trip!

πŸ’° Total Trip Cost Breakdown

Here’s roughly what I spent over 4 days:

πŸš— Petrol from Sydney: ~$60

🏠 Accommodation (3 nights at a local Airbnb): $420 split between 2 mates = $210 each

🍽️ Food & coffee: ~$200

🎫 Jenolan Caves tour: $45

🎫 Scenic World (optional): $50

πŸ›’ Parks pass: Free! National parks entry is gratis in NSW

**Total per person: Around $560-600**

Could definitely do it cheaper with camping or cheaper eats, but this was comfy!

πŸ’‘ Insider Tips for Your Trip

Been up here heaps of times, so here’s what I’ve learned:

β€’ Book accommodation early if going on weekends or school hols – places fill up fast!

β€’ Mobile reception is patchy in lots of spots. Download offline maps (I use Maps.me)

β€’ The weather changes quick up here – always pack a rain jacket even if it looks fine

β€’ Weekdays are WAY less busy. If you can swing it, go Mon-Thu

β€’ Petrol is pricier in the mountains than Sydney. Fill up before you go!

β€’ Dawn and dusk are peak wildlife spotting times – I saw wallabies, lyrebirds, and even a shy echidna!

πŸ“‹ Practical Info

πŸ“ Blue Mountains National Park, NSW (main hub: Katoomba, NSW 2780)
πŸš— From Sydney CBD, 1.5-2 hours by car via M4/Great Western Highway. Or take the train from Central Station to Katoomba (2 hours, ~$6-8 with Opal card off-peak)
πŸ’° $400-800 for 3-4 days depending on accommodation and activities
πŸ• National Park is 24/7. Most lookouts accessible dawn to dusk. Caves tours run 9am-5pm
⏱️ 3-5 days ideal. Can do a day trip but you’ll miss heaps!

πŸ’‘ Tips & Warnings

βœ… Start walks early morning – you’ll beat the crowds and the afternoon heat in summer
βœ… Bring layers! It gets surprisingly cold up there, even in warmer months
❌ Don’t feed the wildlife – those cute birds and roos need to stay wild
⚠️ Some cliff edges don’t have barriers. Stay behind safety fences and watch your step on wet rocks!
