π₯ The salt spray hits your face as you roll backwards off the boat, and suddenly you’re submerged in crystal-clear water alive with silver batfish and curious leopard sharks gliding past. That first breath underwater never gets old, mate!
π Julian Rocks Nguthungulli Nature Reserve
This is THE spot for diving in Byron β seriously, it’s rated one of the top dive sites in Australia! Just 2.5km off Main Beach, this ancient volcanic rock formation is teeming with life. I’ve done maybe 15 dives here and every single time I spot something different. Summer brings leopard sharks (totally harmless and gorgeous), eagle rays, and heaps of loggerhead turtles. The visibility can hit 25-30 metres on a ripper day! You’ll find multiple dive sites here β the Nursery is perfect for beginners while the Cod Hole is crackin’ for more experienced divers. Pro tip: book a morning dive when the water’s calmer.
π Wreck of the SS Wollongbar
For something unique, this sunken wreck about 15 minutes from shore is absolute magic. It’s become an artificial reef now, absolutely covered in soft corals and sponges. Last time I dove here, a massive grouper popped out to say g’day! The wreck sits in about 18-22 metres of water, so you’ll need your Open Water certification. Summer is brilliant here because the warmer water brings out all the tropical species that have drifted down on the East Australian Current. Keep your eyes peeled for wobbegong sharks chilling under the structure β they’re masters of camouflage!
π The Pinnacles (Mackerel Boulder)
This one’s for my advanced divers out there! A cluster of submerged pinnacles rising from the sandy bottom at around 30 metres. It’s a bit deeper but bloody worth it. Summer brings massive schools of mackerel, kingfish, and if you’re lucky, you might spot a grey nurse shark or two cruising past. The currents can be a bit cheeky here, so it’s not for beginners, but the marine life density is off the charts. I reckon this is some of the best diving on the whole east coast!
π Free Alternative: Tallow Beach Snorkel
Not ready to dive? No worries mate, Tallow Beach offers ripper snorkelling straight from shore! Walk down from the carpark and head to the rocky headland at the southern end. You’ll find loads of fish, octopus, and sometimes even small rays hiding in the seagrass. It’s completely free and perfect for families or anyone wanting to ease into underwater exploration. Best done on an incoming tide when the water’s clearer. Pack your sunnies and a rashie β the Aussie sun is no joke!

π€οΈ Summer Weather & Water Conditions
Alright, here’s what you’re dealing with in a Byron summer (Dec-Feb). Water temps sit around a toasty 24-27Β°C β honestly, a 3mm wetsuit is plenty! Air temps hover between 20-30Β°C, so post-dive you’ll be nice and warm. January can bring the odd cyclone swell, which might mess with visibility for a few days, but generally you’re looking at 15-25m viz. Mornings are typically calmer, with the legendary nor’easterly sea breeze kicking in around midday. Book your dives early in the day if you can!
