π₯ The car winds around the bend and suddenly you’re face-to-face with it β that endless stretch of coastal road hugging cliffs, the Southern Ocean crashing below, and the Twelve Apostles standing proud in the distance. This is the Great Ocean Road, and mate, if you’re gonna cycle it, you need to be prepared! I’ve done this ride a few times now, and here’s what’s actually essential for your two-wheeled adventure along one of the world’s most scenic drives.
π΄ Bike Gear Essentials
β Road bike or touring bike – The Great Ocean Road has some ripper hills, so gears are your best mate here
β Spare tubes (minimum 2) – Trust me, you don’t wanna be stranded halfway between Lorne and Apollo Bay
β Multi-tool & tyre levers – Basic repairs can save your trip
β Mini pump or CO2 inflator – Flat tyres happen to the best of us
β Bike lights (front & rear) – Some sections get dark quickly, especially through the tree-covered areas
π§₯ Clothing & Protection
β Padded cycling shorts – Non-negotiable! This ride can be 100km+ depending on your route
β Merino base layers – Weather along the coast changes heaps, layering is key
β Windproof gilet or jacket – Those coastal breezes can be bloody freezing even in summer
β Quality sunnies – UV protection is crucial when you’re out there for hours
β High-vis vest – The Great Ocean Road is busy with cars, stay visible mate
π Sun & Safety Gear
β Aussie-strength sunscreen (SPF 50+) – The Victorian sun is no joke, even on cloudy days
β Cycling cap under helmet – Extra sun protection for your face
β First aid kit – Basics like bandages and antiseptic for road rash
β ID & emergency contact info – Always carry this on longer rides
β Phone with offline maps – Reception can be spotty in sections
π Fuel & Hydration
β Two water bottles or hydration pack – There are stretches with no shops for 30km+
β Energy bars/gels – You’ll need ’em on those climbs near Lorne
β Electrolyte tablets – Prevent cramping on longer rides
β Cash for country bakeries – The Lorne Pie Shop is legendary, don’t miss it!
πΊοΈ Navigation & Planning
β Great Ocean Road map (downloaded offline) – Essential for planning rest stops and water refills
β GPX route file – Upload to your bike computer beforehand
β List of bike-friendly cafes – Knowing where to stop makes all the difference
β Accommodation bookings – Towns like Port Campbell book out in peak season
β Transport plan for the return – V/Line train from Warrnambool or organise a pickup
β Nice to Have
β Bike computer/GPS – Strava those segments and track your progress
β GoPro or phone mount – The scenery is too good not to capture
β Saddle bag – Keep all your repair tools organised
β Chamois cream – Your bum will thank me later!
β Compression socks – Great for recovery if you’re doing multi-day
β Leave These Behind
β Heavy locks – You won’t need ’em at scenic stops, just adds weight
β Cotton t-shirts – Once they get wet with sweat, they stay wet
β New shoes or gear – Test everything before a big ride!
β Huge backpack – Go with jersey pockets or bike bags instead
