๐ฅ Did you know that Byron Bay’s coastal path system offers over 3,000 kilometers of interconnected trails, making it Australiaโs premier cycling destination? I just got back from a solid 4-day ride through Byron Bay, and mate, it was absolutely ripper!
๐๏ธ Day 1: The Iconic Lighthouse Loop
Kick things off with the classic Byron Headland Circuit. Itโs a 7km flat ride thatโll have you staring at the lighthouse and spotting whales if youโre lucky (we saw a breaching humpback last June!). Start early around 7am to beat the heat and get that sunrise photo. Pack plenty of water, thoughโthereโs not much shade up there. End your morning with a brekkie at the new spot near the lagoon, grab some toast and coffee before heading south.
๐๏ธ Day 2: Wategos to Saltwater Creek
This arvo, tackle the section from Wategos Beach down to Saltwater Creek. Itโs about 5km of pure beach riding on packed sand (if youโve got fat tyres, go for it! Standard roadies might want to stick to the boardwalk sections). The scenery here is insaneโcrystal clear water and white sands. Pro tip: Watch out for surfers coming off the water; theyโve got right of way! Stop at Billabong Sanctuary on the way back to see your first koala in the wild.
๐๏ธ Day 3: Byron to Mullumbimby Adventure
If youโre feeling brave, take the 24km ride north to Mullumbimby via the Bicentnal Walking Track. Itโs mostly flat but gets some gentle rollers near Brunswick Heads. This is where the real Aussie vibe kicks inโpassing through tiny towns with great cafes. I stopped at Shambhala Coffee and it was absolutely heaps good! Bring cash for the local markets if youโre here on a weekend. Itโs worth every pedal stroke.
๐๏ธ Day 4: Sunset Spin & Chill
End your trip with a low-key ride along the Minyon Falls trail connecting Byron to Bangalow. Itโs 12km of lush rainforest that feels worlds away from the coast. The humidity rises, so hydrate! Finish with a sunset ride along the lagoon boardwalk. Grab a beer from Coles, find a spot on the grass, and watch the lights flicker on. Itโs peaceful, itโs beautiful, and itโs exactly why you came.
๐ฐ Total Trip Cost & Gear Checklist
Hereโs the breakdown: Bike rental runs about $40-60/day (Iโd recommend a hybrid or gravel bike for the mixed terrain). Entry to Billabong Sanctuary is $25 per adult. Food and coffee will set you back another $100 for the 4 days. Total budget: ~$350 per person for gear and food, excluding accommodation. Donโt forget your sunnies, helmet (mandatory!), high-SPF sunscreen, and a basic repair kit. And maybe a waterproof bag for your phone!
