Northern Rivers: What to Book and What to Skip! πββοΈ
π₯ G’day mates! After 5+ years exploring every nook of the Northern Rivers, I’m spilling the tea on what’s actually worth your time and coin. From secret waterfalls to tourist traps, here’s my honest take!
β Definitely Recommend
Nightcap National Park’s Minyon Falls is an absolute ripper! The 3-hour loop track takes you through ancient rainforest to a 100m waterfall. I did it last arvo and spotted koalas in the wild! Also, the kayaking tour through Brunswick River is heaps good – saw dolphins and got a free history lesson from our local guide. For surf newbies, Byron Bay’s main beach offers perfect gentle waves with instructors who actually know their stuff.
β Skip These
The Byron Bay Lighthouse tour during peak hours? Bloody tourist trap! You’ll pay $15 for what’s basically a crowded lookout. Go at sunrise instead – it’s free and magical. Also, those overpriced ‘organic’ cafes in town centre charging $25 for avo on toast? Nah mate. Hit up The Farm instead for authentic farm-to-table experience without the markup. And skip the generic ‘crystal healing’ workshops – most are just cash grabs targeting backpackers.
π€ Depends on Your Needs
The Nimbin markets can be either amazing or meh depending on your vibe. If you’re after unique crafts and live music, it’s gold. If you’re just curious about the town’s reputation, you might be disappointed. Same with the Sunday Sessions at Beach Hotel – epic for party crews but nightmare if you want actual conversation with mates. Mullumbimby’s yoga retreats range from life-changing to cult-like – do your research before committing!
π‘ Local Secrets
Wollumbin (Mount Warning) sunrise walk is challenging but absolutely worth it! Start at 2am for the 4-hour return trip. The 360-degree views from Oz’s easternmost point will blow your mind. Also, check out Killen Falls near Tintenbar – most tourists don’t know about this hidden swimming hole surrounded by rainforest. For the best coffee, hit up Top Shop in Brunswick Heads – the locals’ choice for 20+ years!
