My Top 10 Things to Do on the Great Ocean Road – Ranked! πŸš—πŸ’¨

My Top 10 Things to Do on the Great Ocean Road – Ranked! πŸš—πŸ’¨

πŸ”₯ G’day! After 5+ years of exploring every nook and cranny of this bloody brilliant stretch of coastline, I’m gonna let you in on my absolute must-dos for 2025. No tourist trap fluff – just the real deal!

1️⃣ πŸ† 12 Apostles at Sunrise

πŸ“ Port Campbell National Park | ⏱️ 1 hour

Forget the midday crowds! I did this last weekend and it’s pure magic watching the sun hit those limestone stacks. The golden light makes ’em glow like nothing else. Absolute ripper of a view that’ll blow your mind!

2️⃣ 🦘 Great Otway National Park 4WD Adventure

πŸ“ Near Lorne | ⏱️ Half day

This is where the real fun begins! Took my 4WD through those muddy tracks last month and spotted heaps of kangaroos and even a echidna. The lookouts from the high tracks are unreal – way better than the sealed road views.

3️⃣ πŸ„ Bells Beach Surf Session

πŸ“ Bells Beach | ⏱️ 2-3 hours

Even if you’re not a pro surfer, watching the legends tackle these waves is epic. I had a crack at the smaller breaks on the north side – got absolutely smashed but what a story! Best during autumn swells.

4️⃣ πŸŒ‰ Maits Rest Rainforest Walk

πŸ“ Maits Rest | ⏱️ 45 minutes

Proper ancient rainforest that’s been here since dinosaurs, mate! The boardwalk takes you through these massive myrtle beeches. Went there after some rain and the mist made it feel like another planet. So peaceful.

5️⃣ 🐨 Kennett River Koala Spotting

πŸ“ Kennett River | ⏱️ 1 hour

Just pull over on Grey River Road and look up – seriously! Saw 7 koalas last time, including a mum with a joey. The kookaburras will nick your snacks though, so watch out! Best arvo activity for sure.

6️⃣ 🦞 Port Campbell Pub Lunch

πŸ“ Port Campbell | ⏱️ 1.5 hours

Nothing beats a cold beer and fresh fish’n’chips after a big day exploring. The pub’s got this outdoor area with ocean views – perfect spot to recharge. Their parma is bloody massive too!

7️⃣ 🏞️ Loch Ard Gorge

πŸ“ Port Campbell National Park | ⏱️ 1 hour

Way more impressive than the 12 Apostles if you ask me! You can actually get down to the beach and the story behind the shipwreck is fascinating. The staircase gives you proper access to those hidden coves.

8️⃣ 🚴 Great Ocean Walk Section

πŸ“ Various access points | ⏱️ 2-4 hours

You don’t need to do the whole 100km! Just tackle a section like the one from Apollo Bay to Shelly Beach. Did this with some mates last summer – coastal views for days and a swim at the end. Heaps good!

9️⃣ 🍷 Forrest Brewery

πŸ“ Forrest | ⏱️ 2 hours

Perfect pit stop on your way back! Their pale ale is a ripper and the brewery’s right in the middle of town. Grab a tasting paddle and some pub grub – great way to end a day of adventuring.

πŸ”Ÿ πŸŒ… London Bridge Lookout

πŸ“ Port Campbell | ⏱️ 30 minutes

Most people just do a quick photo stop, but stick around for sunset! The way the light hits those rock formations is insane. Plus, you’ll avoid the bus crowds who’ve all gone back to their hotels by then.

πŸ… Honorable Mentions

β€’ Split Point Lighthouse (Aireys Inlet) – Great for photos

β€’ Teddy’s Lookout (Lorne) – Epic coastal views

β€’ Gibson Steps – Beach access to the Apostles

β€’ Lorne Sea Baths – Good for families

β€’ Cape Otway Lightstation – History buffs will love it

πŸ“‹ Practical Info

πŸ“ Great Ocean Road, B100, Victoria, 3230
πŸš— From Melbourne, 2.5-3 hours via Princes Highway M1 then B100. Or catch the V/Line bus to Torquay and rent a car there.
πŸ’° Free for most attractions! 12 Apostles car park $5/hour. Great Otway NP $13 per vehicle. Food budget $50-100/day.
πŸ• Best visited sunrise-sunset. 12 Apostles car park 24/7. Most lookouts accessible anytime. Pubs typically 11am-10pm.
⏱️ Minimum 2 days, ideal 3-4 days for proper exploring

πŸ’‘ Tips & Warnings

βœ… Start early from Torquay to beat the crowds at major attractions
βœ… Download offline maps – phone reception gets sketchy in sections
❌ Don’t speed – the road’s got heaps of hairpin turns and police love this route
⚠️ Watch out for wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk – especially wombats and kangaroos!
