Just got back from 3 days cycling in the Grampians! π΅ββοΈπ¨
π₯ G’day mate! Just wrapped up an absolute ripper of a weekend cycling through the Grampians, and I’m buzzing to share the inside scoop with you! This place is a bloody paradise for anyone on two wheels, with tracks that’ll make your heart sing and views that’ll blow your mind.
ποΈ Day 1: Halls Gap & Wonderland Loop
Kicked things off with a classic! Started in Halls Gap β grabbed a coffee and some brekkie at the bakery (fuel is key, mate!). The Wonderland Loop is about 9km of pure gold. It’s a bit of a climb at first, but the payoff at the Pinnacle lookout is absolutely worth it. Spent the arvo cruising around the town trails, super chill and perfect for warming up. Finished the day with a well-deserved beer at the local pub.
ποΈ Day 2: Mount Victory Road Challenge
Right, today was the big one! Mount Victory Road is no joke β it’s a solid 20km round trip with some serious elevation gain. The views from the top, though? Unbeatable. You can see all the way to the Black Range. I took it steady, packed heaps of water, and stopped at the Reeds Lookout on the way back. Pro tip: start early to beat the heat and the traffic. This is the day you’ll be bragging about later!
ποΈ Day 3: Grampians Peaks Trail Section & Brambuk
Saved the best for last! Tackled a section of the Grampians Peaks Trail near Mount Stapylton. The rock formations here are out of this world β seriously, it’s like cycling on another planet. After the ride, I popped into the Brambuk National Park & Cultural Centre. Learnt a bit about the Jardwadjali and Djab Wurrung people, which was awesome. Super important to know whose land you’re exploring. Finished with a gentle ride along Fyans Creek before hitting the road back to Melbourne.
π° Total Trip Cost Breakdown
Let’s talk dollars, mate! This trip was surprisingly budget-friendly. Petrol from Syd: ~$180. Campsite at Halls Gap (2 nights): $60. Food & drinks: $120. Bike hire (if needed): $80/day. Park entry fee: $13 per vehicle per day. So all up, if you’ve got your own gear, you’re looking at roughly $400-450 for a bloody epic long weekend. Absolute bargain for the adventure you get!
π‘ Essential Tips & Tricks
Alright, here’s the good stuff. First, always check the weather β it changes quick in the Grampians. Second, download the offline maps; phone reception is dodgy at best. Third, carry more water than you think you need β there are taps but they can be far apart. Fourth, start early, especially in summer β the midday sun can be brutal. Fifth, let someone know your planned route. Safety first, but fun always! Oh, and the wildlife? Keep your eyes peeled for kangaroos at dawn and dusk β they love the trails!
π Practical Info
π Grampians National Park, Grampians Rd, Halls Gap VIC 3381
π From Melbourne, it’s about a 3-hour drive (250km) via the Western Highway. From Sydney, it’s a solid 9-hour drive (900km), so maybe break it up with an overnight stop in Albury.
π° Park entry is $13 per vehicle per day. Bike hire in Halls Gap is around $80/day. Camping is approximately $30 per night per site. Food and petrol costs will vary.
π The park is open 24/7, but best cycling times are from sunrise to around 10am, and then from 3pm to sunset to avoid the worst of the heat. Autumn (Mar-May) and Spring (Sep-Nov) are primo seasons.
β±οΈ A solid 3-day weekend is perfect to cover the main highlights without rushing. You could easily spend a full week exploring every nook and cranny if you’re keen!
