Great Ocean Road Access Changes 2025 – What You Need to Know! π§
π₯ Heads up – new Great Ocean Road rules coming into effect! Just got back from a weekend drive down there and noticed some big changes that’ll definitely affect your next trip, mate!
π What’s Changing
Right then, here’s the deal! From January 2025, they’re introducing timed entry passes for the Twelve Apostles car park during peak season (Dec-Feb). No more just rocking up whenever, sadly. Also, some sections of the Great Ocean Walk are getting seasonal closures for track maintenance – mainly around the Castle Cove area. Oh, and parking fees are jumping up to $25 per day at major lookouts. Bloody typical, I know!
π When It Takes Effect
Most of these changes kick off from 1st January 2025, but the timed entry system starts earlier – they’re trialling it from this December! The Great Ocean Walk closures will be happening in blocks: Feb-March for the first section, then April-May for the second half. Best to check the Parks Vic website before you plan any hikes, yeah? Last weekend I saw heaps of confused walkers who didn’t know about the upcoming changes.
π€ How It Affects You
If you’re planning a road trip, you’ll need to book your Twelve Apostles parking slot online in advance – probably 2-3 weeks ahead for summer weekends. For us bushwalkers, those track closures mean you might need to split your Great Ocean Walk adventure or tackle it in sections. Families with caravans should note that some pull-over spots are getting removed too. Not gonna lie, it’s a bit of a pain, but hopefully it means fewer crowds!
β What You Need to Do
First things first – download the new Parks Vic app (launching November) to book parking and check track conditions. If you’re planning summer hols, book those parking passes NOW! For walkers, consider doing the walk in autumn instead – fewer crowds, better weather, and no track closures. I’ve done it in April before and it’s actually heaps good! Also, keep some cash handy for the increased parking fees at other spots – not everywhere takes card yet.
π‘ Tips & Warnings
β
Book parking passes online as soon as they’re released
β
Plan Great Ocean Walk for autumn to avoid closures
β Don’t assume you can just turn up at Twelve Apostles anymore
